OK, you're right, that difficulty level really isn't fair.
my next try set a new N! record for me - base level 4, character level 3.7 or so. again spawned with sight of 15 or so hellspawns.

IIRC he changed former sergeants colour to green to avoid confusion.

pistol = 10mm = former human = white
shotgun = shells = former sergeant = green
chaingun = former captain = lightred

for reference I set mine to:
pistol = 10mm = former human = green
shotgun = shells = former sergeant = gray
chaingun = former captain = red
But I think I'll try it your way for a few.
