Oh yeah!  It's been so long since I played Doom and I completely forgot that enemies would shoot back at whoever hit them.  They would start shooting at you, but if there were hit by a stray bullet they would turn around and fire at the shooter.  I used to use a level maker to make enemies fight each other for my own amusement.  Spider Mastermind vs. Cyberdemon was probably my fav, though I don't remember who won...

I remember that level too. It's Cybie who wins. Always.

I don't think this is actually true. The Cyberdemon won MOST of the time, but due to the "pain chance" mechanic in Doom and the fact that the Spider Mastermind had a continuous stream of fire, it would sometimes get lucky enough to trigger the Cyberdemon's pain response while it was firing, and interrupt its firing sequence, enough times that it would kill the Cyberdemon first. This didn't happen often, because the Cyberdemon had a very low pain chance, but the Spider Mastermind was one of the few things in the game that could pump out damage fast enough to see the Cyberdemon's pain response happening.

hah! i love that level too, and i found out the hard way that when u get behind one from ur platform, get behind Spidey. if u get behind cybie, they will still duke it out, but spideys chaingun makes holes all over the wall behind cybie, and even if you have cybie RIGHT between you and spider, that chaingun will proceed to rapidly make mincemeat out of you.... with its MISSES!!! note, you can make sure cybie loses by pumping a few rockets into him as ur running behind spider. it doesnt take much. then when cybies dead.... 1 rocket should bring down spider... lol its funny.... BUT
ever seen Doom 2 episode "Nirvana"? it has a big acid pool in a corner, and at the end is a platform with a required key on it. the acids pointless, it doesnt hurt u much as u run over. but, as soon as you pick up the key, a shitload of enemies spawn back where you where!.... ok, what i do when i need to let off some steam, i load up that level on Ultra-Violence, input god mode code IDDQD, input weapons/ammo code idkfa, grab that key, and go BFG BALLISTIC!!! oh, i almost forgot, i have the Doom 2 for Windows 95 CD, it uses a launcher, i can set it to respawn monsters!!!! so we have 40 respawning enemies, including THE ENTIRE monster list, except cybie, spidey, and pain elementals. ie mancubi, revenants, Arch-Viles, Barons, Knights, Chaingun Dudes (the endgame monster list names him the Heavy Weapon Dude, but the manual calls him the chaingun guy. weird), even Spectres!!! and, they KEEP shooting me, hitting each other, and getting into GIANT brawls!!! meanwhile im pumping out BFG shots like a maniac, refilling my ammo with cheatcode constantly....

also, IMPS SHOULDNT FIGHT IMPS!!! in all Doom games, the rule was, SAME MONSTER : NO DAMAGE AND NO FIGHT! ie, if an imp fireball hits another imp, 1 no fight, and 2 the one who got hit actually doesnt take damage. but, if a baron flings an acid ball and it hits an arch-vile, youve got one HOT baron... and one DEAD Arch-Vile!!! its especially funny watching a chaingun dude strafe over a group of lost souls!! they dive bomb him! but seriously, fix the fighting thing. by the way, ive always liked the idea of the Former Human Commando, even though he wasnt in the doom games. also, Kornel, if ur reading this, whats up with Angel of Berserk? Large Health Globes and Medkits are supposed to berserk you!

Former humans, former human sergeants, former human chaingunners, and lost souls would each get mad at others of their own "species" but you are right that apart from them, monsters would not intentionally attack others of their own species. But in DoomRL, NO monsters intentionally attack other monsters, at all--a basic, essential mechanic of Doom, which you need in order to get very far in the game, which isn't present in DoomRL. This is probably a perfectly fine thing. If DoomRL had monster infighting then the game would be made much easier, as you could expose yourself to enemy fire for just long enough for a few enemies to hit each others, then go back behind cover and wait for them to finish each other off (just as you do when playing Doom and Doom 2); somehow Kornel would have to really ramp up the difficulty of DoomRL in other ways to compensate for this, if he were to add monster infighting to DoomRL, and that would change the game drastically.

umm  ur right, the zombies attacked each other. lost souls can't get mad at each other, they melee. melee can't miss and hit someone else. also, monsters don't intentionally attack others. they only "retaliate", and once the offender dies, its over. usually what happened was one guy would get hit, fire back, catch someone else with a missed shot, and then the newcomer and the first shooter together would mince the unlucky sap and they would all return to trying to blow your head off. THATS what it should be like in DoomRL, except without the same species no freindly fire thing. since the guy who gets hit has to take a hit, and NOT DIE, and SURVIVE long enough to SHOOT BACK, mega-damage bastards wouldn't get into fights often, as same species can't piss each oter off. btw by freindly fire  thing i mean how stray shots between same species in Doom can't hurt same species. ever. except with the zombies.

Lost Souls, being projectiles themselves, can damage other monsters found on their attacking path, causing them to retaliate.

In any case I think involving monster infighting in DoomRL is a case of fidelity to the original Doom games vs. playability; including monster infighting would make the game play much differently and require re-balancing many things.

as i said above, fighting ends as soon as all offenders are dead. so, the only way a large group of enemies is going to get into a major riot is if MULTIPLE enemies in the group are explosive shooters. bullet/plasma is not capable of causing fights involving large numbers of monsters! and only multiple explosives, because if there is one hell baron, or even mancubi, and the rocket splash ticks off everyone in the group, THEY ALL SHOOT HIM AT ONCE... ie dead monster, no more rocketer, group proceeds to blow your fragging head off, as usual. multi-rockets, and they little guys get pwned, then your left with 1 guy standing, heavily wounded... but anything that mightve dropped is GONE... think about it...
