Poems for games
« on: December 23, 2007, 10:09 »

Could these poems be used in a game, by any chance:
1) Oblivion [inspired by "Ex Oblivione" by H.P. Lovecraft]

Real life is too dreadful to live peacefully.
I like to dream in silentime; I live in dreams only.
I once beheld in my dreams, a gate loom in sight.
Beyond it stood contrasting scapes,
Some dark and some light.
In the dark, I saw terror, horror and fear untold.
The sky was perverted in a shade of green and gold.
Then I looked to the other side: I saw nothing but bliss.
I tried to force my eyes away,
but it was too tempting to miss.
I felt the gate drawing me
And as I nearned my goal,
I saw inscriptions on the gate,
Which made my mind roll.
Some inscriptions on the gate said,
"Beyond lie blissful dreams."
Others said, "Do not cross!
For ahead lie pain and screams."
My reason was being put to the test.
I knew not what to do.
Little did I know that time,
What my mind could construe.

I made my mind to go beyond.
To see just what was there.
I pushed open the gate and strode...
To look in shock and stare.

For there is naught but nothing beyond the gate.
Nothing to love and nothing to hate.
What I find is not solace,
It is not solitude.
The only thing I see here
Is oblivion absolute.
I now realised what the blissful inscriptions
On the gate had meant.
The peace and the solitude from the pain of life
Would seem God-sent.
But then I knew the other messages,
What they had meant when they said,
"Go not beyond! For there only lie-
Fear and Horror, Terror and Dread."

I knew by then that here I'd be;
Here I'd be till the end.
To walk the void bereft of senses,
I thought I was condemned.

I feel I am now
At the threshold of Madness,
Without pain or bliss,
Euphoria or sadness.
I thought then of a strange supposition.
The real world had gone. I now dwell in oblivion.

This is the other one "Rudiments"

RUDIMENTS
-Rimesorrow
As if a searing bolt scorches the sun,
Promises made cannot be undone.
When one's days pass in gloom,
Darker shades all rise and loom.
The Wanderer travels without a soul,
To consume beings and their all as a whole.
He goes about alone in solace.
Moving anywhere in time and space.

Those he burns live a blood-curdling dream.
Bow down before him, for he reigns supreme.
Wherever he points, people cower in dread.
For they know that shall soon be dead.
Their souls shall be rent, before they do know.
Their very essence will leave them and go.
Only one who is truly sublime
Can salvage them before it is their time.

And there, on the hill alone he stands.
Having conquered waters and sands.
Unfazed he looks into the fiend's eyes.
They both collide as they utter war-cries.
This battle will ensue over hill and dale.
Through woods, through glades, through storm and hail.
Even though the Scourge generates in blight.
I believe we shall be redeemed from this plight.

They shall tremble, shall despair.
Forth the chill that hangs mid-air.
Anger, anguish, damage share.
Go now! Follow Terror's heir...

GenRogue! Yeah! I knew it wasn't a hoax!
Do you really think these could be used somewhere? I'd love to see them being put to some use. :)

Here's another:

EQUILIBRIUM/GRAY

A fire of ice and a frozen flame.
Life and death are just the same.
Winds of fear do the demons tame.
Where am I without a name?

Why am I alone? What have I done?
I seem invisible under the yellow sun.
Raging thoughts, make me run.
I've been separated; I've been shunned.

I feel as if I'm burning alive.
Sent to the gallows at the stroke of five.
Decaying slowly in this carrion-hive.
Losing my breath every moment I survive.

Searing daggers scar my heart black.
Taken so many steps, I cannot go back.
Nightmares and dreams into my mind attack.
Thorns of malice, cause my soul to crack.

I know not if I shall see the light of day.
As life it seems will fade away.
The pendulum swings; It changes its sway.
I do not have anything more to say.

No, I think they are giving you samples of poems from players of other games, heh.

Do not look at the sides, stand free in the middle.
Then look up, at the blue, and solve the riddle.

but it was too tempting to miss.
I felt the gate drawing me

When you know no rest, you chose in confusion.
What as bliss appears, is just an illusion.
Changing prison cells from one dark to brighter,
mind is trapped and lost, the motion is halted.
Like melody is continuous flow of tones,
the trap is to stuck, hold in just one tone.
Find the blue gate, little up in the middle.
That's where you can see the melody of iddle.

I've never tried to write anything serious, I can only admit to writing 4 StarWars relates songs (well, text only), but only 1 in English and all jocular. ;)

"Techno-killers" such as Doom sadly have no room for poetry, but for example cRPG games set in fantasy worlds, such as Oblivion you've picked already, could benefit greatly from poems like yours. I would love to buy a book in-game and find some ancient elven poems - better than reading world history in e.g. Baldur's Gate.

I am SW fan and I'd be happy to hear it.

Ah, contrary I think it could be very interesting. For example, perks descriptions alone sound like poetry already. "Fed you guns well, love'em".. etc
