Author Topic: [H|96%|11] My first time with DoomRL (2 hours). 'Very' sudden death..  (Read 4818 times)

After many recommendations I've tried DoomRL. I find it very challenging, and it seems really polished/loved up.
I am proud/happy I made it quite good, for the first-time-playing.. :>. However I experienced VERY unexpected and sudden death :/ .. There was closed door and barrel next to it. Didn't want to blow it because level was almost done and I didn't want to lose any possible items behind the door. When I opened it there was former commando inside the room.. and another former commando appeared behind me  (ack..!) in that turn from area I already cleared out.. that's very strange.. I made one step back to get out of sight of the one inside the room.. and that was my last move: from 100% health to 0% in one turn: You open the door.
The former commando fires! You are hit! You are hit! The barrel explodes!
The barrel explodes! The former commando dies. Boom! You are hit! You
are hit! You are hit! The former commando fires! You are hit! You are hit!
You are hit! You are hit! You die!...

Comments welcome.. ;)

Well it was your first time. Everyone's having problems then, it's perfectly natural. The next time will be much more enjoyable, I'm sure.

Sounds like that one commando stepped in a teleporter and warped straight behind you. And well, yeah, you could've easily died from two plasma bursts and a couple of exploding barrels, with those stats.

Thanks for feedback. "Those stats" ? Do you mean health (no Ironman) ?Or mean something else. Anyway, that's the death I like ! Hah! :)

For a first time - awesome job !
Yeah, being attacked like that is a bad luck. Remember - when you see a barrel and you didn't get a message like "You sense something very valuable here !", blow it. You'll surely kill (or at least wound) a few enemies, and maybe cause a chain reaction. It's better to lose some good items and don't risk being killed by barrels and a former sarge hiding somewhere in the shadows, than have good stuff and die few seconds later...

Yeah, that makes sense. But I think blowing them too much can possibly destroy too many useful items. Good 'show', though.. heh. As, allways, balance is just the thing that fits everyewhere.

You can just push them away *before* opening the door for most of the time ;). Also - computer maps show you every single item, making you perfectly aware whether or not sticking barrels around a room and detonating them is a safe way to save ammo and health or a waste of few med-packs and power-ups...

Yeah, but walking with barrels around like that is more like inviting death than ignoring them I think. Computer maps are useful but luxury. However, any of these solutions can be used depending on situation I believe.

If all the doors in the room are closed and you've cleared every part of it (or it was initially empty) - it's safe... as safe as it gets ;). It may seem useless at this point but comes in handy if a monster walks in through the door or anything chases you back inside - one less thing to worry about.

Yeah, I think everything that works is good depending on situation you find yourself in.

As for the little story it was something like that:
100% health, 4 big med-packs, full backpack..
Chaingun D1 and Plasma Rifle S1 loaded, eager and ready.

Looks peaceful.

Then I think I move and open the door

Former commando inside and another just appeared behind..

I think I move south-east .. and the rest you can see in mortem. The upper commando shots, blows barrel and dies, then other one finishes job. Hah!

You shouldn't have opened the door before AT LEAST pushing that barrel another square to the left, for one thing...
Another thing is making sure is everything in the open area is wiped out (hard to do, as you can't really see everything at once)...
Lastly, what could've helped you here - staying clear of barrels (and that means NOT entering rooms near them) until you splatter everything in all the other rooms.

Your mistake was in opening a door with a barrel next to you. If an imp, caco, baron or hell-knight had fired at you, the splash damage would have ignited the barrel anyway.

I'm sympathetic though. The situation is sometimes impossible to avoid, particulary with unseen barrels on the inside of the room.

Yeah.. easy to say. But when you play and play and everything goes smooth you are not afraid of one barrel next to a door when you take out everything before they fire at you.. so you actually NEVER know when nasty thing happens.. it just happens. And afterwards you think.. hmmm, I could do something else.. And then you start to be cautious..until it also becomes rut and you run through dungeon in similar fashion until you die again suddenly.. and thing goes all over again, haha ;).
But yeah, I could be more careful, however it was hard to foresee another commando appearing out of nowhere right behind you.. interesting death though,:D
