I'm glad to read that a new DoomRL release is your top-priority at this moment, and i'm glad this forum inspired you (i almost can't beleive you were thinking of stopping this project before!)
There's no shame in this being a 'simple' game, it allows you to do most of the things you could do in doom itself, and doom gameplay wasn't very complex. And this elegant simplicity garantuees a very short learning curve, while leaving enough room to develop more advanced strategies even after playing this game 100 times over.

Yup, I guess this is it's biggest advantage compared to other roguelikes.
