Before him 12 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 10 of those were killed.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 2 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
1 killed the bastard and survived.

Somewhere around Hell 4 or 5, I ran out of ammo. I mean completely out of ammo. I had already spent at least two levels using a rocket launcher as my main weapon and trying to avoid situations where I'd have to kill imps. It got so bad that when I found an Anti-Freak Jackal, the best thing I could do was unload it to feed my chaingun. And then it happened again on the very next level with a Trigun. I picked up a plasma rifle and ran around praying I'd run into some Arachnotrons or Revenants just so I could keep shooting after they died. Finally on Hell 6, I was really completely tapped. No rockets, no cells, four bullets in the chaingun. At the end of a short corridor: a former captain. Mana from heaven! I gleefully pranced over to tap him on the shoulder and politely ask for his weapon.

But he had a friend. Then two friends. And some other guys showed up. I had to double back down the hallway, and loop around to the other door; thank god they were all standing on a lever or something. There was a red blip in the room! I'm sav... oh, it's not a Berserk Pack. :(

I'm down to my last four bullets, I've burned through a bunch of armor and medkits, I'm up against the wall. I did the only thing I could. I charged the following group...
    2 sergeants
    3 captains
    2 lost souls
    2 imps
    a Baron of Hell (!)
...and beat them all to death with my bare hands.

I didn't have any ammo problems after that. Next level was a city with a room completely full of cells, so I dropped my rocket launcher and gruffled those up. The rest is history. YAVP.

It's always smart to have combat shotgun as your primary weapon, chaingun as a secondary. With 2 or 3 stacks of 50 shells and 2/3 stacks of 100 bullets you practally never run outta ammo. So use the combat shotty for close range, and chaingun longer range. But make sure though to use your shotgun for 80% of the time.

My second strategy is to have 3 slots of each ammo type. Except for plasma cells, because they are used by both you plasma rifle and your BFG. For plasma cells you better take 5 stacks or so. And when you feel brave enough, it's also smart to visit the Wall, for the backpack. Than you can reduce your stacks to 2, and 4 for plasma cells.
Of course, you don't literally have to follow this strategy. You have to observe your own "consuming behaviour" and find the balance yourself. But 3 of each is a good start.
