Before him 7 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 6 of those were killed.
And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This run actually happened yesterday, but I still remember quite a few of the details so maybe I can explain it.  Plus I had issues with registration yesterday - for whatever reason the image refused to load.

Also, before anyone asks - I did not savescum.  That one save was around level 14-15, for a meal break.

Anyway, the way this started was to try out Shottyman for the first time.  I'd failed quite a bit with other strategies I'd tried (I'd wiped the info from the last version I had, so about 30-40 other attempts at the game - and my other victory ever - don't show in the 'Before him....' message), and I always was a fan of the shotguns in this game, so I decided to take it as my sole initial focus for once (I'm more used to TaN or SoaB early on - the latter especially when I intend to go to Hell's Arena in a given run).

Did Hell's Arena and Chained Court because I thought I'd need the weapons from each.  I didn't figure on getting the Assault Shotgun in level 8 - and (possibly as a result), around the point when I got it, I accidentally threw away my rocket launcher for the extra space (so I forgot to keep it for the Wall) :(

I was intending to work on Hellrunner after getting Shottyman, and was saving energy cells because I figured I'd want a plasma rifle later..... but the appearance of the Railgun (which I believe was IN Hell's Armory) threw both strategies right out.  I knew I needed Juggler at that point - and if I'm not mistaken, the Assault Shotgun and Railgun were the only two weapons I carried until I got my BFG 9000 (which never actually got used).

The Grammaton was carried solely for bragging rights (which isn't much, apparently - judging from the post-mortem files I've seen here, it looks like that's a pretty frequent Unique).  Though not long after getting the Grammaton, the Railgun supplanted the Assault Shotgun as my main weapon of choice.  Only one room really scared me in the lower levels - it was either in level 21 or 22, where there was a room with two Arch-Viles as well as at least one each of a Mancubus and Baron (I think each one got revived once, but it may have been twice - I didn't keep a full mental track of those).  I went through most of the medpacks I had at the time, lost some red armor (I forget whether the suit where I'd put the mobility mod was destroyed here or earlier), and was very concerned I'd die.  I did eventually manage.... not with my BFG 9000 as I should have but, being the arrogant newb that I was, with the Railgun.

I rushed through levels after that, but did stay long enough on level 24 to find an invulnerability globe.  The Cyberdemon was no trouble with the Railgun.  (Before any of you ask, I did not nuke the Cyberdemon because I wasn't mentally ready for what was past him, and I was also a bit too nervous that my invulnerability would wear out before the bomb went off - which turned out to be unfounded as I was invulnerable for the whole fight.)

So all in all, I wound up really, REALLY lucky this run.  In all honesty though, I'm probably not going to do this difficulty level again for a while.  After a completion on the next difficulty - if I get the chance I probably WILL nuke the Cyberdemon then - I'll probably try to beat Angel of Marksmanship.

Feel free to leave comments on this playthrough - I'd especially like to know if I was physically ready for what was past the Cyberdemon.  (I had the ammo - but did I have the skills, healing items, and armor to go there?)

PS: Don't mind my occasional editing - this is a tendency of mine.  I'm trying to get used to the abbreviations and terms you guys use rather than spelling out just about everything.

Oh, you could have likely ripped "him" thoroughly apart :)
But no biggie - you'll have more chances to do that. Though less... convenient chances, I reckon :P
Good game :)

I suggest jumping into higher difficulty levels. HMP and UV have a good blend of difficulty and rhythm, the kind of balance that allows a player to get more out of himself than he'd expect.
I feel lower difficulty levels make me more prone to making stupid mistakes, the lack of action leading to me paying less attention.

Hmmmm....

The idea of jumping into HMP and UV (which I actually unlocked not too long after I did this playthrough) sounds somewhat interesting.  Actually, as long as the additional number of monsters is more than 20% (to compensate for not having the lower difficulties' experience bonus), I'm game.

Right now I'm actually working on the Angel of Impatience challenge (I want to get up to Captain status ASAP for all those challenge mode unlocks - and actually, Angel of Impatience is the only thing standing between me and Liutenant ranking) - and quite a bit of bad luck has impeded me there.  (Enemies hoarded around a Supercharge, and at the same time having to walk halfway across the map for any other health items left over just because that's how the item spawns worked out, is one example.)

I must agree with TFON. If I feel I'm getting weaker, like dying very early on a low difficulty level, I usually play some UV or N! games and then, while I retry the lower difficulty, I think "Wow, is it really that easy?". UV and N! could really train players.

I considered this consensus and attempted the Angel of Impatience challenge on Ultra-Violence a few times.

Here's whats odd - despite me not getting as far yet as I have with the "Hey, Not Too Rough" difficulty, doing that challenge on Ultra-Violence actually feels EASIER.  It may have something to do with finding chainguns and double shotguns in the first few levels and gaining levels faster due to so many more kills.  Then again, finding Hell Knights by level 3 and Barons by level 5 is a bit of a shocker.

Edit: I've decided to take further stuff on this side discussion about higher difficulties and other things here.
