I figure the experienced players knew this already, but I thought I'd throw this out to those who are still frustrated by this.  Use run (comma key) to try to run into the item.  Run won't let you step into hazardous terrain, so if you cannot run to the spot where the item is, there's lava or acid underneath.

The whole sight thing is fixed in the beta, though.

Yeah, I also discovered this trick myself. However, it's a bit annoying to always use the run key to check for lava IMHO.
But indeed, maybe it's good in case you're very low on health or so.

Now that's something really useful. I died once, because I was low on health and former commando (I think it was former commando) dropped large med-pack.

I didn't even get a chance to use it...
