Roguelikes for the DoomRL Soul
« on: March 25, 2006, 07:35 »

Hi, This is a 50% off-topic post (The other 50% being that all the other Roguelikes have nothing to do with doom)

So here is the big question:

What Roguelikes would you reccomend to the DoomRL Community?

Entry's must include a working link and brief review.

So I will kick this thread off with Gearhead Arena

--

http://gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.org/ (Under Gearhead 1 - Get the Windows ASCII version.)

Gearhead Arena is a neat game by Joseph Hewitt (You may recognise that name from the DoomRL Credits) that is set in the far future, It is post-apocalypse in the sense that the Earth got nearly blasted to pieces a few thousand years before the story starts, But what matters is that the earth is now a happy place, Full of trees, Flowers, Lovely oceans and of course: Giant robots.

Thats right, You get to own and operate your very own Mecha.

I'll let you guys see for yourself.

Dont give up on your first game, It has a steep leaning curve but an even greater platau of fun!

--

Now, Share your reccomendations!*

*DoomRL does not count.

Rogue- the one that started it all, naturally!

Mike's Adventure Game (MAG)- Rogue with all the kinks worked out. (Much more likely to work on a modern computer than the original Rogue.)

Ancient Domains of Mysters (ADoM)- Rogue with a plot. =p

Decker- I don't know if this counts, seeing as it's not ANSI graphics, but still. It's a psuedohacking game based on Shadowrun 2e. Quite fun ^_^

One of the games i like to play is Caverns of Xaskazien, because it's also a coffee-break sized game. Very hard to finish though, just like DoomRL.

And offcourse i play ADOM, but that's a very long game indeed. The story is great though.

edit: on second thought, the story is vague.. it's that you can shape the story is what attracts me to ADOM. I occasionally play Nethack too but somehow i can't seem to play that game for any serious length.. A lot of people think this is a good rl though.

Couldn't even play it...

No matter what, the best game is the one I can actually play. Got windows XP btw.

Doom RL is my first game of its kind anyway ..

Got Win XP Pro - no problems with playing ADOM ... and speaking of ADOM I suggest trying out ADOM Sage - it's an "enchanced" version of linux port (but works on windows too :] ) - it supports features like coloring certain messeges etc.

My favs would be:
The UnReal World ( http://www.jmp.fi/~smaarane/urw.html )
GearHead and ADOM.
Linley's Dungeon Crawl and IVAN are great fun, too.

Really URW is like any other commercial game, You should not hate a game and its creator just because he is trying to make money.

Like most other commercial games it will inevitabaly become freeware in time aswell.

Anyhow, I'm quite happy that someone felt this thread worthwhile ressurecting, But if it goes astray then I will have to lock it.

So lets get this thread back on the track!

3059

Despot: 3059

The earth has become overpopulated and now people are colonising other worlds, Each world has been provided with a road system and city's by robotic workers before the colonists arrive so its just like home!

You are a colonist on the latest planet to have been colonised, Now make your way on a new world!

Anyhow, The plot has no appearance in the game and it is closed source so there is no chance of that happening for a while, But there is plenty of stuff to do - The world stretches on for evermore and it is the only game to feature construction.

All in all, Its a great idea but it needs a few more things relating to the backstory.

Well you know.. sometimes you gotta pay to play something you like! :p

It is like those people that would never buy a hosting and resort always to free ones, and keep complaining, when nowadays we have cheap hosting everywhere ;)

3059

The rombus LOS looks weird to me and the game seems a bit slow, the music is not very good for theme in my opinion, however the game shows some nice ideas like the iconic characters, the interactions, and the plot looks interesting... just hope they continue working on it and make something nice.

DeadCold
This sci-fi roguelike is got a very nice atmosphere, is very balanced and has some great ideas. I usually play it while listening electronic music... it really needs a low hitpoint warning though... as it is a bit slow and most of the deaths are YASD as the maps are big and you have to travel a lot, I really hope Joe can work a bit more on it. Some work could also be done on its website, which is really crappy ;p

Yes, It shows promise but needs more.

You need some equipment, Earn some cash by buying IC construction kits, Attempting to turn them into blank IC's and then try to program them, At later levels you will do it right almost every time. From there you can sell them for a profit or use them yourself.

Anyhow, Just buy alot of equipment. The illogical statistic generation system will do stuff like create hats that give you +8 poison damage or somesuch, Just buy some stuff that looks like it will work well.

Also if you can, Try to buy items with a high movement score - It helps you move.

To attack, you need to double-click a hostile and press A, *IIRC*. The slow motion helps also a bit, but the 3.6 version of 3059 is outrageusly hard... You need to pray that you find no hostiles in area...

Oh, and about the recommended roguelikes: I guess I'll be generic and go with ADOM. I'll just add that it looks best on XP when you force the DOS line/column mode.

Decker is not a roguelike :p I once classified it as a roguelike, but then it isnt got the elements needed to be one. Specifically it lacks spatial consistency, which is the most determining factor for a RL IMO

And what is does that line/column mode do?

It corrects the colors (XP has a sucky color choice for DOS) and makes the levels use original size (which is not so important)

Edit: that correction is also used in doomRL .bat file - just copy over and insert "adom.exe" <_<
