I played DoomRL in 2007 for a couple of months, and only made it to Cacodemon Rank.
I started playing again 2? months ago, and i'm almost at Mancubus Rank.
Anyway, i finished ADOM, Nethack, Zangband and Tome if that gives any account for the amount of hours i spent playing Roguelikes.
Regarding new challenges/ranks, i don't know how the work for v0.99 is going but if you could make so people could design new episodes, it would allow for much more content for the game. Not full modding, just being able to add/change the unique levels would probably mean a lot.
Another thing, have you ever considered making Unique Levels mandatory when/if they spawn?
P.S. - I don't find Nightmare that hard nowadays, once you lose that 100% clear mentality and run for the stairs, the double ammo/powerups/healing makes it little mroe difficult than UV.

Kornel, maybe you should just add Ultimate Hell Nightmare - just like in doom3, your hp would decrease over time to 1 % or sth :D

Sooner or later full modding will be possible. However the idea of designing new episodes/unique levels intrigues me -- could you expand on that with detail? (how it would be choosen, loaded, integrated with scores, etc...)

That takes away choices -- DoomRL is quite linear so I at least wanted to give possible paths of choice.

Kornel, I have an idea - you could make something like 'custom lvl mode' - that would be levels designed by someone (not generated), but challenges won't work on them, maybe someone would make D1/D2 levels into this, so monster placement and all would be designed, I think that you should be careful with full modding because randomness should be in the first place, so I think that challenges should be only avaiable in random levels. I'm kinda blabbering but hope you get what I mean :D. So making maps should be easy, just place wall there and there, some monsters and exit (secret rooms support would be nice - like opening with 'c' walls to activate secret door) - I think that should have whole separate scoretable. It would be good, because while someone is frustrated he can't complete AoB he can relax on classic d2 maps - another problem is shooting through corners - if you know where the monsters will be, it's kinda easy.. and I have an idea about highers lvls - when there are stairs just ignore them, but when monster is standing on crate, it can be just normal (ground) level, but impassable (you can shoot monster but not melee), after pressing lever the barrier is off and monster can walk util it raises again. I hope you will consider this, because it would be totally Doomish and not letting players modding whole game when focused on dungeon levels.
Ah I know! Maybe just 'custom lvls' should not be taken into account to score table at all? I don't know for sure, but monster kill count should be ignored, because someone could make a easy map with free kills and get faster to new rank - or they would count but in separate scoretable like I said before.

Ever try Cthangband? Its pretty good and you probably would like it.
Hmm Kornel could make a new difficulty, old school Nightmare!, pretty much the same thing as DoomRL Nightmare! except all enemies move insanely fast. :P Could even call it Pray to God or something like that.
