 9 killed the bastard and survived.
 2 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

Well i tried clearing everything until reaching Chained Courts, but wasn't really prepared to take on Arena although a AoMs has a good shot of clearing with the 200% heal midway.
After Chained Courts it's the usual i do in Nightmare mode, grab all the zerk packs, ignore the Barons and try to dive levels as fast as possible while zerking.
I found a Arachnotron cave and i corpse camped them until i had 10 stacks of plasma cells. I found 3!! homing devices and quite a few Invulnerability Globes so i can't say there was no luck involved.
I was Invulnerable AND zerking fighting the CyberDemon so no issues there.

Wow you are great! I think that by rules everyone should provide DEMO when posting a mortem.. cmon, they're using almost no diskspace so cmon! Ah, and I'm going to watch it right now :)

Pretty good, you didn't need RL at all, guess your build is one of the best for N!. One question: Why you're not using your name in scoreboard, only some random? :P

I must say, Dervis : "Impressive, most impressive..."

These mortems (and the Ao100 one before) spawned a few thoughts:
1) high time to get that DoomRL replay system working...
2) it seems that there's a need for more extreme challenges
3) it seems there's a need for new ranks :P

Dervis, how much time did you spend on DoomRL approximately? How much do you play? Since which version?

Kornel.. Kornel Kornel.. I think that replay system in doom RL would be the best ever, because it would include sound effects right? Just like in normal game.. and with option to auto save replay for every game = no problem at all. But I think this replay should contain save file of character who played and would be loaded temporarily just to replay, and then it would return back to normal! We're cheering on you Kornel! :D

I played DoomRL in 2007 for a couple of months, and only made it to Cacodemon Rank.
I started playing again 2? months ago, and i'm almost at Mancubus Rank.

Anyway, i finished ADOM, Nethack, Zangband and Tome if that gives any account for the amount of hours i spent playing Roguelikes.

Regarding new challenges/ranks, i don't know how the work for v0.99 is going but if you could make so people could design new episodes, it would allow for much more content for the game. Not full modding, just being able to add/change the unique levels would probably mean a lot.

Another thing, have you ever considered making Unique Levels mandatory when/if they spawn?

P.S. - I don't find Nightmare that hard nowadays, once you lose that 100% clear mentality and run for the stairs, the double ammo/powerups/healing makes it little mroe difficult than UV.

Kornel, maybe you should just add Ultimate Hell Nightmare - just like in doom3, your hp would decrease over time to 1 % or sth :D

The whole achievement system will be rewritten, so... maybe ;).

Sooner or later full modding will be possible. However the idea of designing new episodes/unique levels intrigues me -- could you expand on that with detail? (how it would be choosen, loaded, integrated with scores, etc...)

That takes away choices -- DoomRL is quite linear so I at least wanted to give possible paths of choice.

Kornel, I have an idea - you could make something like 'custom lvl mode' - that would be levels designed by someone (not generated), but challenges won't work on them, maybe someone would make D1/D2 levels into this, so monster placement and all would be designed, I think that you should be careful with full modding because randomness should be in the first place, so I think that challenges should be only avaiable in random levels. I'm kinda blabbering but hope you get what I mean :D. So making maps should be easy, just place wall there and there, some monsters and exit (secret rooms support would be nice - like opening with 'c' walls to activate secret door) - I think that should have whole separate scoretable. It would be good, because while someone is frustrated he can't complete AoB he can relax on classic d2 maps - another problem is shooting through corners - if you know where the monsters will be, it's kinda easy.. and I have an idea about highers lvls - when there are stairs just ignore them, but when monster is standing on crate, it can be just normal (ground) level, but impassable (you can shoot monster but not melee), after pressing lever the barrier is off and monster can walk util it raises again. I hope you will consider this, because it would be totally Doomish and not letting players modding whole game when focused on dungeon levels.

Ah I know! Maybe just 'custom lvls' should not be taken into account to score table at all? I don't know for sure, but monster kill count should be ignored, because someone could make a easy map with free kills and get faster to new rank - or they would count but in separate scoretable like I said before.

Ever try Cthangband?  Its pretty good and you probably would like it.

Hmm Kornel could make a new difficulty, old school Nightmare!, pretty much the same thing as DoomRL Nightmare! except all enemies move insanely fast. :P  Could even call it Pray to God or something like that.

Ever try Cthangband?  Its pretty good and you probably would like it.

I don't know how you got your DoomRL unique levels sorted out, so i don't know how feasible this would be.

Anyway the concept would be:
- Start menu option : "Select Episode"
- On that menu would appear a list with the possible episodes. (from an .ini/.cfg file if not automatic)
- Selecting an episode would cause:
   - A different player.dat/score.dat would be used.
   - All Unique levels (including start level) would be read from an external 'wad' file (overriding regular ones).
(Optional)
   - Custom designed ranks.
   - Custom designed challenges.
   - Custom items.
(/optional)
Of course, a very important part of this would be to design an user friendly tool to create and compile the maps files.


Now for the fun part :P:
Map idea (Lvl 8-12ish):
"The Undercaves"
Lots of water on the right side, with the ocasional acid pool.
RL on the middle, shells and rockets all over the place.
Invulnerability Globe, 1 large med-pack, 1 phase device on the left
Advanced Double Shotgun, Red Armor, damage mod, reload mod on the right.

Or maybe something like special 'challenge levels'? Your goal is just to complete the level, so you have to choose your tactic wisely, like for example a bunch of monsters on one side (just enough to gain a level) and you have to kill them without being hit, and then choose Hellruner to be able to cross the lava running with minimum hp left (and you'd have to know where exactly start running on lava because on other side there is a wall with 1 door) :D
