Ranks, Badges and Medals
« on: July 20, 2009, 18:49 »

In the new player data I will present the following types of things to get:

Ranks -- apart from the two major ranks (skill and experience) there might be possible other ranks ( like Mancubi Hunter (rank 4) for 400 Mancubi kills or Survivor (rank 7) for 7 won games in a row, or Quake Marine (rank 3) for some special achievements ;> ). These encompass general player progress.

Badges -- these encompass general player progress, and are binary (either you have a badge or not), basically they're named 1 level ranks, sometimes achieved just because you gain a rank, and serve for flavour value.

Medals -- you can recieve those 1 per game, and they sum up in your player stats. The best example is Ass Kicking Marine Medal, achieved when getting 100% in a game, or Arena Champion for each won Hell Arena.

Suggestions? Ideas? I'm especially looking for cool names, and cool ideas for those :).

Come to think of it, I wonder if there's any reason to have separate Badges and Medals?

I think that badges rather display your skill and experience.
Medals are for achievements (for example killing 3 imps with one bullet [;   )

Medal idea: OMFG?!- awarded for finishing game, scoring 100% kills and beating all special levels. On UV.

Not certain if this has already been suggested, but if you wanted to include badges/medals that enhance the player stats during game play, I think that would be an interesting incentive for acquiring them.

They could either persist between games for something absurd like killing 1000 monsters reanimated by archviles in a non Ao100 game, or not be persistent and just be for something like completing Hells Arena. Bonuses could be tiny, like +0.3 to speed. Just a thought.

OMG. 3 kinds of ranks, plus badges, plus medals, plus lots of numbers to masturbate on. There ain't such word as "overkill", right?)

For me - there's no much point in separating badges and medals because i don't care about how much times i got an achievement after i got it 1 time. But if people really think that they should be separated - then i have nothing against that.

About ranks - i don't completely get, why we need 3-rd kind of ranks? Skill ranks are given for completing challenges, and experience ranks are given for killing lots of specific monsters. And what you propose is to add one more rank that would represent completing of achievements?

I think for achievements (no matter how they are called) there should be several groups of achievements with several levels, and each higher level should require the same thing, as lower, but more, or harder. And, in addition to that, one-level achievements, that are just fine in quantity of one.

Unlockables with permanent bonuses, or some kinds of cheats - not for DooMRL, i think. Modding would grant you all the power you want, if you want it.)

Achievements ideas (not mentioning the ones MaiZure proposed and the obvious ones). Sorry, i'm not so good in naming:

- Having at least one of each common weapon type (pistol, shotgun, CS, DS, chaingun, rocket launcher, plasmagun, BFG, chainsaw) at once in your inventory.
- Having an invulnerability warn off (1-2 seconds, optionally) before the thermonuclear bomb explodes.
- Kill AoD without being berserk.
- Get 3 Hell Caves in a row in Phobos Hell (15-25 levels).
- Kill all the monsters on the level without them seeing you even once (firing out of sight/Intuition/Cat's Eye).
- Clean a Phobos Hell level with only your fists (optionally on high difficulty).
- Win the game without having an RNG to spawn you even one unique (exactly spawning, not picking up spawned uniques wouldn't work).
- Die with 8 or more medkits in inventory.
- Having a green, blue, red, and Angelic armors at once in your inventory.
- Killing a BoH that was wearing Baron's Armor.
- Finding a Megasphere. :P

I'm with Blade when he says there's no need for counting further than your 1st badge.
I would set badges for actually conquering difficult achievements, and medals for the stupid deaths, rare events, etc.

I would add badges for beating Unique Levels on special challenge modes:
- Defeat Hell's Arena in NTR/HMP/UV/N! while on AoI challenge (Duelist/Veteran/Challenger/Champion)
- The Wall: AoLT
- Halls of Carnage: AoMs
- Hell's Armoury: AoB
- City of Skulls: AoMr
- Spider's Lair: AoMC
- The Mortuary: AoP

I tried diversifying without reaching soul-crushing difficulty (AoB Arena anyone?).

Medals:
- Get killed by a former human while over experience level 6. (BOOM! Headshot!)
- Get killed while standing on a doorway. (Thou shall not pass!)
- Get killed on melee by an Arachnotron. (They're harmless once you get close)
- Get killed by a monster using a barrel. (No need to break those)
- Kill 15 monsters with a single shot. (Ammo saving)
- Lose more than 50 hp on a single player turn and survive. (Ouch! That hurt!)
- Kill 10 monsters on a row using chained barrel explosions. (Barrel fun!)
- Die immediately after using a phase device. (The wonders of teleportation)
- Nuke yourself. (Cut the red wire. No! The blue!)
- Kill 4 monsters with one Railgun shot. (Line them up!)

P.S. - I'll think of names and some more stuff later.

Edit: I simplified a bit.

I think I got names for some of those great Blade ideas:
Quote
- Kill all the monsters on the level without them seeing you even once (firing out of sight/Intuition/Cat's Eye).
Ninja!
Quote
- Killing a BoH that was wearing Baron's Armor.
No such thing as coincidence
Quote
- Die with 8 or more medkits in inventory.
Sclerotic
Quote
- Having a green, blue, red, and Angelic armors at once in your inventory.
Over the rainbow
Quote
- Finding a Megasphere.
Final sign of apocalypse

Couple of my ideas for achievements.
-Almost...- get killed on level 24
-Phelps- flood a level with lava or acid and survive
-Extravagance- drop a unique
-Overkill- apply 4 damage mods to a weapon
-Hell fastest gun- have firing time lower than 0.3 sec.
-Wisdom- wield a Dragonslayer:P
-You won't take me alive!- nuke yourself on un-cleared level
-Wastefulness- destroy a unique
-Hobbit- win a game without wearing any boots, even for a sec.
-Tinker- apply more than 4 mods to a weapon
-Skills?- die on Phobos Surface
-Irony- kill Cybie with a RL
-When Big Gun gets to small...- overload a BFG

I for one would be firmly and wholeheartedly against... No, wait... *Takes kit gloves off*

Sorry Blade, but these three ideas are downright stupid... Any achievement that relies purely luck to get is no achievement at all... As for megaspheres, I really don't think they're anything like as rare as any of you make them out to be... I've seen at least three or four in just over 20 games... Not that many to be sure, but finding one every five or six games hardly makes magespheres any rarer than any given unique...

Indeed, I would also be against what you might call "dis-achievements", that is, getting an anchievement for doing something wrong or something stupid, such as Balde's "die with eight or more medpacks" idea... However, I would be less strongly against such achievements...

As for Dervis, I like his "Beat City of Skulls on AoMR" type achievements the best, though the achievements for killing lots of monsters with one shot are also nice... Once again though, I don't like the "kill yourself with a rocket" type ones...

Finally Gargulec... Once again we see some more of those "die stupidly" achievements... Interestingly, some of his better ones (such as Hell's Fastest Gun and and Tinker) seem to mostly gravitate towards players om AoMR runs...

EDIT:

Of the achievement ideas already posted, these are the ones I would support being included...

Quote
- Having a green, blue, red, and Angelic armors at once in your inventory.
- Kill all the monsters on the level without them seeing you even once (firing out of sight/Intuition/Cat's Eye).*

I get the feeling that this would be either too hard to code, too hard to get or both though...

Quote
- Defeat Hell's Arena in NTR while on AoI challenge (Arena Duelist)
- Defeat Hell's Arena in HMP while on AoI challenge (Arena Veteran)
- Defeat Hell's Arena in UV while on AoI challenge (Arena Challenger)
- Defeat Hell's Arena in N! while on AoI challenge (Arena Champion)

- The Wall: AoLT
- Halls of Carnage: AoMs
- Hell's Armoury: AoI
- City of Skulls: AoMr
- The Vaults: ?
- Spider's Lair: AoMC
- The Lava Pits: ?
- The Mortuary: AoP

At least the concept of the above achievements if not the exact ones listed...

Quote
- Killed 3/6/9/12/15 monsters with a single shot.
- Killed 5/10/15/20/25! lost souls with a single shot.
- Killed 3/6/9/12/15 monsters on a row using chained barrel explosions.

Again, the concept of the above is sound enough, though the numbers might need to be changed... You'd be the most likely to acomplish the second one on City of Skulls using a BFG from the Halls...

Quote
-Phelps- flood a level with lava or acid and survive
-Hell fastest gun- have firing time lower than 0.3 sec.
-Wisdom- wield a Dragonslayer:P
-Hobbit- win a game without wearing any boots, even for a sec.
-Tinker- apply more than 4 mods to a weapon
-Irony- kill Cybie with a RL

Just a quick note of a few of the ones I don't support that aren't in the "die stupidly" category...

Quote
-Extravagance- drop a unique:

Too easy.

Quote
-When Big Gun gets to small...- overload a BFG

Too easy again... It's not really an achievement when any player can do it on practically any run...

Quote
- Wastefulness- destroy a unique
- You won't take me alive!- nuke yourself on un-cleared level

See above... The latter also might fall under "too random" (a nuke can easily not spawn)

Quote
-Overkill- apply 4 damage mods to a weapon

I'm not actually sure this is possible... I think three's the maximum for any one type of mod...

No wonder- AoMr is my favourite challenge:P
And about dying stupidly- best achivments system I've seen so far is the one in Amorphous + online game. There was about 120 of them in game (and I've got more than 80 huh-huh!), and when some of them required great those of skill from you, other, well, were awarded for terrible luck:P. And it was very fun indeed.

Well, I guess we just have different tastes in achievements...

I edited my post above to simplify a bit.

Any achievement that relies purely luck to get is no achievement at all...
I agree with you in part. True achievements should represent something that required planning and skill to accomplish.

On the other i enjoy it when some strange stuff happen even if it was completely luck / stupid play related. Think of them as "I went to Hell and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" tokens, they help you remember having fun playing the game.

I would like to receive a small token of when i got a Railgun and was shooting lines of monsters. There's no skill involved there, but it's fun. 5 sucessive cleaves on the Mortuary, changing to your BFG because there were monsters everywhere, also fun. A stupid death which makes you want bash your head in the keyboard is also fun in its own way

Indeed.
Next pack of ideas (hey, I like it!)
-Clean style- kill all monster on a Phobos Hell level without being hit ONCE
-Knock, knock- 'Open' a door with BFG
-Golden Bullet- kill a Cybbie with you last bullet
-Third World War Coming- carry two nukes at once
-He earned that!- fist an Arch-Vile to it's death
-Another brick in The Wall- clear the wall in less than 3:56 min
-Dead and Killed- clear a N! level of monsters AND corpses
-Brave- kill a Cybbie wearing no armor
-No peace in death- kill the same monster 3 times

My reactions...

Quote
-Clean style- kill all monster on a Phobos Hell level without being hit ONCE*
-Knock, knock- 'Open' a door with BFG**
-Golden Bullet- kill a Cybbie with you last bullet***
-Third World War Coming- carry two nukes at once****
-He earned that!- fist an Arch-Vile to it's death*****
Dead and Killed- clear a N! level of monsters AND corpses*6
-Brave- kill a Cybbie wearing no armor*7
-No peace in death- kill the same monster 3 times*8

*Hard, but a good achievement idea...

**An achievement for firing a BFG at a door... What's the point?

***Might be interesting, though most would just wait until Cybie was "almost dead" and drop all of their guns and ammo except for a loaded rocket launcher...

****Awards should mostly (I think) be something you can plan to get... This one relies too much on the RNG.

*****Hmm... OK...

*6: This one's borderline, but if it were up to me I wouldn't put it in as it relies on RNG giving you a "the air is really humid here" lever and would probably spawn more than one annoying thread with people asking how it's done...

*7: Take it or leave it...

*8: You mean killing a monster and then killing it twice more through a vile resurrecting it? You know, I actually like this one because it's an achievement that you can either plan for or could encounter incidentally while playing the game normally (chaingunners sometimes milk former captains for ammo in this way for example and killing a given captain three times would net the chaingunner this achievement quite by accident)... I'd fully support this one, assuming it isn't an absolute nightmare to code...
