Post mortem challenges
« on: April 20, 2006, 08:55 »

What if you had certain challenges that if you completed, it would go in your post mortem? eg.

-------General-------
36 brave souls have ventured in to phobos.
34 were killed.
1 was killed by somthing unknown.
And 1 couldn't handle the stress and commited a stupid suicide.

He was never chicken enough to resort to a health pack.
Only 5 others have managed to do this.

He used a thermonuclear bomb, and lived!
He is the first soul who has managed to do this.

etc.

Suggestions for challenges:

The two up there ^
Staying in agressive for over 1000 turns (or somthing larger like 2000)
Not harming a single human, but killing all hellspawn.
Never firing a (Insert gun here), despite having it for over 500 turns.
Killing the CD (Or JC!) with a melee weapon (that is, using lotsa plasma then melee, of course you can't beat either using ONLY melee.)
Killing the CD (Or JC!) using no plasma.
Doing both of the above suggestions (GIVE THE GUY A PRIZE PEOPLE!)

I'm all for that!

Its a great idea to compliment challenge modes, Theese are like passive challenges that you can find out about as you play along.

A little addition to that theme, Would it be possible for the DoomRL program to spit out a string of text which you can then post into the forums to get a post mortem? I know it seems a little over the top but it does ensure that mortems are genuine.

Seems nice. The problem is that there is no clear line between "postmortem challenges" and "premortem challenges" - which ones should be which? Take an example -- 5-slot inventory challenge -- a) the game checks wether you have ever carried more than 5 items, b) you have only 5 slots. -- another one -- melee challenge -- a) you can't pick up other weapons b) the game checks wether you do.

Both pre- and post- challenges have their strengths and weaknesses -- and it's hard to choose which one for a particullar challenge. And having both at the same time is stupid.

Duh, I allow myself the comfort of double-posting -- sue me :-P.

Actually I thought about that for a long time now. It was something that I have planned for Carceri -- an automatic Ladder system, with the possibility of linking in from the forum (so it would be repasted there). The game would spit out a binary encrypted version of the mortem, and either ask you wether it should upload it or let you upload it manualy. A plethora of fun community ideas opens here, including but not limited to:

a) an ongoing score ladder for each difficulty
b) challenge ladders
c) competitions
d) community fun :-]

I think it would be great for the community and I plan to implement it someday. I'd like to also hear your ideas on that tough :-).

There is one difference:

Pre: Limits you to doing it, so therfor you know about it.
Post: Chances are, you won't even know that you've done it until you die.

I think it's a great idea! And as AC said, it would stop people from posting fake mortems.

I recall one, but it would stop people from ever posting one in the future...

The first "I found JC!" post had more holes in it than a swiss cheese.

I think this is about the third time I've posted this idea.

I would also like to say how utterly underwhelmed I am by the Hell Knight avatar, Its just not big enough..

Perhaps you could have it so that a challenge mode enforces what you can and cannot do, And to tell if a mortem is telling about an active challenge mode you could say "He met the challenge of x"
