Option to clear input buffer

I realize this will be met with people saying I should just play slower, but I'd like to see an option in the config file that when turned on would discard all incoming key presses prior to displaying any new messages. This would help me greatly when I'm looking for the last mob on the level and stupidly hold down a movement key. Currently I'll just get murdered because by the time I see the mob/message that I'm being shot, I probably have another 10 or so movement inputs queued. Clearing the buffer would solve most of the problem, assuming I can let go of the key the moment the message popped up, but in practice (depending on the repeat speed) it would still turn a large number of queued inputs into around 1 or 2, which is much more live-able. Just a thought.

That, and use the comma key instead of holding down the direction button...

But this is a feature I would like to see for a future release.

Play slower?  I thought the idea was to play fast - a RL for coffee breaks, a game in 15 minutes (get that badge!)

But yes, I wouldn't mind a feature like this.  Sometimes I see something I'd like to pick up - and then input all the appropriate movement keypresses and 'g'...only to eat a few hits from a previously unseen enemy, hah.  Then I go back to one keypress at a time, sigh.  That'll learn me.

I used to play like this... then I started my N! AoMC runs. That really beats tactical defense into you, as well as single tapping.

Unfortunately for me, I already have the AoMC diamond badge and I still haven't completely learned this lesson. Come to think of it, I've been playing roguelikes for ~15 years and I still only slow down when I perceive that there might be danger... or I'm on an elemental plane in Nethack (you only have to die once on the plain of air before you smarten up). Maybe I'll learn one day, but I bet I'll still get burned from being "too comfortable".

IMO the game should stop accepting input from a key that is being held, if there is primo an enemy in sight, or secundo you're about to walk in hazardous terrain. Then the game does nothing unless you release and press the key again.

I don't think the console receives key release events. I'm rather sure the OS is handling (possibly the console itself) how fast to repeat the key being held. So clearing the buffer is probably the best we can hope for, unless the official GFX that I hear whispers about handles the key presses directly.
