Before him 172 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 149 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
14 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 2 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 6 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
5 killed the bastard and survived.

Now instead of thinking it is possible I know it is. Didn't really expect to finish the run, mainly just started it so I had something to do while drinking my morning coffee. Once I hit dlevel 16 and had two homing phase devices, my excitement started to grow a little bit. At that point there was still seven stairs to find, and using a homing device out of fear early could cost me the game. I only had to run through about three arachnotron levels, two where easy (read: lucky stair placement), the other I was fortunate enough to start with a red armor and berserking (the armor didn't last even half the ~30-40 step journey). Level 21 could have gone much worse, it was an open level with stairs in the corner but the entrance to the vaults was three steps away. I was getting worried at level 22, nasty mobs all over the place and there wasn't much room for exploring, so I decided to sacrifice a homing device early and proceed to get hit with a rocket the moment after. Again with the luck, the stairs were against the side wall of the level, so the blast didn't knock me off of them. Level 23 was a quick stair case find, 24 was a homing device.

I can rest easier now knowing that I have at least one diamond badge.

Nice run.  A player who actually plays it like a coffee break RL rather than the ~2 hour+ plays that seem to be posted here pretty often.

How much of a factor was fire angel?  Without hellrunner AoPc seems like a different game.

To be fair, after the coffee, most of my day has been either playing DoomRL, or writing an OpenGL terminal to play DoomRL with.

It's hard to tell how useful Fireangel is, which I'm assuming is more then it looks like, but it's the only thing worth getting after a certain point. Without being able to take HR you don't have to feel bad about taking TaN first. I opted to grab Ironman next, so full healing and power-ups would be slightly more effective. After that Fireangel was a given, because there wasn't anything else left to take.

In terms of how useful it is, probably a decent amount. In tight areas with Barons of Hell, Hell Knights even Imps I was much safer if there was a layer of mobs between me and the source of the projectile. In terms of running across an open area with a group of mobs, it's probably the only way to survive without HR. There was a few times this run where a Baron of Hell or two are in the center of a large room with other mobs, and I needed to get to the other side. Without HR, I had to carefully make sure I could maximize the amount of meat shields between me and the Barons, while running straight at the Barons. Their melee attack hurts, but sometimes it's worth it to avoid the extra chances of a direct ranged hit.

In the end though, AoPc takes a healthy amount of luck on top of tough choices (do I spend 10 turns grabbing that medpack, or just hit the stairs now....).
