Are self-referential teleporters a bug?
« on: January 16, 2010, 03:31 »

Twice today, I've stepped on a teleporter and had it go to the location of itself, killing me. Is this supposed to be possible?

Twice in one day? Wow.

They're a known bug in the teleporter code. I'm uncertain of the difficulties involved in solving it, but whenever I've seen Kornel questioned about it, he's basically gone, "They'll be that way for awhie yet."

BTW: From my tests, it would appear that infinite tel-loop is caused by the telporter moving you onto a square with barrel on it/

Not this time. I'm sad to say it's happened enough I can tell the difference.

This, however, still seems to be correct, as I've had the same results through testing.

Can't say I've ever seen that happen. Enemies would die in the same way then, correct? Hehe, imagine a room with arch-viles and arachnos with a self-referential teleporter. I could only hope for that.
I guess the lesson is, don't take teleporters unless you absolutely need to, or you see an enemy go in or come out the other side.

Ah, what if an enemy teleports on top of you? Always wondered about that. Been too afraid to try it out. Spider's Lair would be the best place, but I don't want to die that far into the game.

I think you get some sort of alert that something just tried to telefrag you, but I don't remember.

I think you get some sort of alert that something just tried to telefrag you, but I don't remember.

You take some damage (it is not, however, a one-hit kill unless you're already chronically low on health) and a message pops up saying something like, "It feels as if someone is trying to explode you!" or words to that effect when an enemy tries to teleport onto the square on which you happen to be standing. As far as I know though, telefraging (which can sometimes occur when a bunch of enemies try to take a teleporter close behind each other) is instantly fatal to all monster types...
