Make Knights&Barons actually KNOW about their immunity
« on: February 15, 2010, 08:01 »

Immunity to acid, if somebody doesn't know.

Actually, this is really strange - while they're immune to acid, why they're running from it and stay paralized when surrounded by it? I don't think it's a bug, but by some thoughts it can be.

I propose that they should don't differ acid floor and ordinary floor.

While I'm not sure how the AI is currently written (either Kornel or someone who is actively reverse-engineering can advise), I suspect that each of the monsters have very similar AI programmed in them.

I think a worthy cause would be to come up with specific strategies for each monster-type to address this problem as a whole.

There is some indication of this already in place with the way demons will charge across anything, including acid or lava. I agree - it should be extended

BoH's are like cats. Cats are also "immune" to water, yet they will always avoid swimming in it.
Conclusion: There's a bug in God's AI code for cats.
:P

Seriously now: I think, since HK's and BoH's are still some sort of dumb beast, they should have the "instinct" to stay outta the acid/lava even though they can bear it. Like a cat.

Oh we knew that there's a bug in the AI code for cats... something about allowing a genetic algorithm to run amok without control parameters.

But then again, HK and BoH are among the aristocracy of Hell.  Why should they be like cats?  Especially if they take zero damage from acid -- they should actively hunt DoomGuy down to purge him of hell.

Cats avoid water, but when they must save their children, they do not avoid it. In critical situations like this cats do not avoid water. When a guy with the big rifle invades their home, would they think about avoiding water?

So and BoH&HK. When you try to shoot them out would they think about disliking water(acid)?

I like how everyone took the cat metaphor and ran with it.

Well, My opinon is that BoH's and HK's should have a little bit of the demons tendancy to run after doomguy.

I suppose if Kornel really cared about giving his nondescript Hell Demons some character, he could make the Knight's and Baron's aversion canon and just program in a 'cost' pathing algorithm for them.

By 'cost pathing' I mean that, say that in order to path to any specific place, the AI would find the least costly path. Normal floor/water would have a cost of one, and say acid has a cost of 5. In order to convince a hell knight to path into acid, then the acid path would need to be a shortcut that would avoid more than 5 normal tiles.

Just an idea.

The question is, why would it cost more to a HK or BoH if the ground is acid when they have immunity?  I think that's the gist of what this discussion is about... correct me if I'm wrong here.

I don't know, they're nobles! They don't want to mess up they're fancy shmancy clothes or tarnish their expensive baubles!

That's what I think. I don't see why a hell noble would wade through lava or radioactive sludge in order to get to their victim. Dirt belongs to the lower demons.
