-- General ---------------------------------------------------
Before him 66 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
60 of those were killed.
And 5 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...
1 killed the bastard and survived.
--------------------------------------------------------------
This is a death from awhile ago. I named him "Stupid SoG"--at the time I was using "____ SoG" names for all my marksman characters. "Lucky SoG," "Crazy SoG," etc. In spite of the name, I actually didn't make that many stupid mistakes with this one.
I got demolished on level 16. I had about 66% health. I walked into a room with... 3 barrels, I think. Took 1 or 2 steps in, and a Mancubus fired as soon as I stepped into its line of vision. 1 Mancubus + 3 barrels + 1 enclosed area = 1 extremely dead space marine. It happened so fast, I didn't even know what hit me until I looked at the mortem.
A lot of players would probably write this off as unavoidable. But I try to treat each death as a learning experience, and ask myself: what could I have done to prevent this?
Well, I could have picked up those Small Health Globes. At least one of them. There's really no reason to leave Small Health Globes behind if they won't put you over 100%. Even if they will put you over 100%, it's debatable.
Of course, even with 100% health I might not have survived. My mistake was going into that room. I noticed the barrels, and the potential danger. But I was more concerned about destroying items than protecting myself Quite frankly I was getting cocky. I had the Beretta, and Gun Kata, which I had been using to rip through everything.
At that point in the game, there really weren't too many items that I needed, though. The chances of finding something really helpful in that one room were pretty low. On the other hand, the chances of running into an enemy that can blow up all those barrels and instakill me are fairly high. If it wasn't a Mancubus, it could have been a Revenant, or a Baron, or an Arch-Vile. Hell, even a shotgun sergeant could have messed me up pretty bad in that situation. So it probably would have been smarter to just blow up the barrels, then enter the room. I would have been fighting a severely weakened Mancubus, and dodging its shots enough to at least reduce the damage.
Another option would have been to go around and enter from a different doorway. The Mancubus might have hurt me, but probably not enough to kill.
So basically, it was bad luck that killed me, but with more caution I probably could have survived it. You have to prepare for the possibility that things will go wrong.
