Before him 32 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 15 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 15 souls claim to have killed him...
2 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
7 killed the bastard and survived.
6 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

God! That was close. Like, REALLY CLOSE! As you can see, I was almost dead there when I finished Cybie with my last resort blast from my BFG.

You see, I had been gradually been bled dry of my resources through the last few levels of hell. The severity of the monster spawns NECESSITATED that they be taken out with extreme prejudice, and that lead to me being a little low on plasma cells, and a few mishaps drained me of my health packs.

Really, to let you know, Ultraviolence requires a different strategy than the other modes. You'll see I have quite a few different weapons, and an extra plasma rifle. This was so that I could switch strategies on the fly, while maintaining heavy firepower. I kept the rocket launcher to reshape the levels and create VITAL shortcuts, but I never used it for offensive purposes, as it's too slow. I also kept the combat shotty with a single stack of ammo for scouting purposes, and trust me, scouting is EXTREMELY important when theres the chance of you running into a pack of revenants that instakill you in a single turn. Getting the BFG was a must, because even though they consume plasma like nobody's business, you won't see anything else chew through the hoards of high level monsters like this baby can, and trust me, you WILL need to chew through them to get to the exit eventually. Don't be hesitant to use it either, while the BFG is expensive to use, you'll see that there's some groups of monsters which are simply too big to dispose of in any other way, and learning when it's best to whip it out WILL save your life.

One thing you HAVE to learn is that you should NOT hoard your plasma weaponry, thinking you can save it for a better day. No, you have to discard the impulse to save your best stuff, because that plasma was made to kill monsters, and that's what you should use it for. In fact, ALWAYS keep a plasma rifle as your secondary in case you accidentally find yourself in an uncomfortable position that only gratuitous amounts of violence applied in a very short time-frame can solve. Not kidding, you never know when you will need to kick alot of ass at a moment's notice, so keep your ass-kicker on hand.

Now, I'm not saying to use the plasma rifle all the time, no, because even though plasma cells are made abundant very early on, you should only seriously consider using them on Barons and up. So don't be stingy, health is MUCH more important than plasma cells.

I'm glad I found a good set of uniques, the phaseshift boots gave me some free speed (although it could have been acquired by agility modding a regular pair of boots), the advtech mod gave me an advanced plasma rifle, and the onyx armor helped alot against Cybie, who can normally chew through even really awesome armor like nothing.

My build is a little unusual as it doesn't have a master trait. However, thinking practically, I realized that NO master trait was worth the hardship of bending over backwards for in these conditions, not even Ammochain, especially with how early some monsters would spawn. You'd be facing Hell Knights at level 3, so I decided that every bullet counts, and I got 2 levels of Eagle Eye first, which allowed me to use RUN while holding a rapidfire weapon and maintain an edge of accuracy whlie boosting my evasion and speed. Then I went for two levels of Tough as Nails, and then badass, and then another TaN. Badass is simply awesome, a must have, but more importantly, TaN is important because every level of it makes it seem like you're wearing a higher level of permanent, indestructible armor, which is invaluable. Then I got three levels of Son of a Bitch in a row, as that trait allows me to finish off monsters much more quickly, and with fewer bullets, so I'm essentially conserving both ammo and health with it. After that, I went for finesse, and then juggler, because being able to instantly switch between your weapons is a BIG deal when a single turn can spell life or death. If I hadn't gotten juggler, then Cybie might have been able to finish me off. Then, lastly, I got a level of hellrunner, but in retrospect, maybe I should've gotten Ironman instead.

Also, one trick that I finally got to exploit in this run was the free Mortuary heal. Basically, I got to the stairs to the Mortuary in fairly bad shape, and immediately thought "Yeah, I won't survive if head down there..." and then I looked in my inventory, and remembered that I had a homing phase device. With this in mind, I headed down into it, grabbed some free armor and health, homing phased to the exit and skidaddled out of there!

It was tough, it required patience, planning, and ALOT of firepower, but I beat Ultraviolence! This was definitely the hardest thing I've done yet, as even doing Angel of 100 wasn't this hard. Now, let's see if I can do Nightmare!

Congratulations! I just finished a standard HNTR game today (yeah it was my first cause I'm a n00b). You have a lot of good advice that I will use in my next game.

I'm glad my advice could help you! One thing I forgot to mention, that's worth remembering: the BFG blows up all items in it's blast radius, this includes corpses. Keep this in mind when facing an archvile pack.

Even the corpses? Wow, If I can get a BFG before Mortuary, It'll be a cake walk.

Hah, now that's goin' through in style.  Surprised you didn't touch any of the top tier abilities though.

By 'top-tier', I'm assuming you mean master traits. Yeah, MT's are nice, but they have some problems:

1) Master Traits are set up so that they always take atleast 7 levels before you can get one, and only one.
2) Master Traits require dedicating yourself to that Master Trait. By this, I mean you have to alter your playstyle and build to fit the MT's particular niche.
3) Also, for the sake of balance, MT's will almost always block other vital traits. Ammochain blocks both TaN and EE. Army of the Dead blocks finesse (and thus both juggler and whizkid), and Hellrunner. Gun Kata blocks TaN and SoB. What this does, in my opinion, is that while your character gains a powerful ability, it also makes him cripplingly overspecialized.

You see, the point I'm trying to make is that mastter traits are nice and all, but they force a 'rigidity' in the player that inhibits adaptability. When your character is constantly facing different challenges, being able to adapt at a moment's notice is vitally important. Trying to obtain a MT is a form of this rigidity that I'm talking about, since you have to practically pour all six of your first levels in order to get one, and that can easily deny you abilities that would better aid your immediate survival.

So what I'm trying to say is: look at your particular playstyle, look at the traits, then look at whatever challenge your trying to overcome, and THEN modify your build to whatever you think will be the best for you. Don't just rely on the Master Traits to carry you to victory.
