New Lever Effects

We all talk about adding more lever effects. But I don't see any topic where actually ideas posted.

So I start it:

Warp lever
Effect: Teleports every enemy on the level.
Usage: Once
Message: "You feel momentaly warped"

Turret lever
Effect: Attacks every enemy in your sight  range  and you with a random attack (monster or weapon)
Usage: 1-5 times
Message: "A turret pops up from the celling. The turret hits you..... THe turret disappears"

Accuirement lever
Effect: Spawns random non-unique item on the nearby square.
Usage: 1-3 times
Message: "An item falls from above"

Flash lever
Effect: Stuns enemies and darkens level as if you just entered the lever
Usage: Once
Message: "You see a flash of extremely bright light"

Random Effect lever
Effect: Power-ups you by a random power-up, or damages you by 3 HP ignoring armour
Usage: 2-3 times
Message: Power-up message or "The pain wrecks your body"

I do agree that levers need changing, because as it stands I never use them for any reason whatever.

To add:

Funny Lever
Effect: Does nothing, but tells a corny joke with each pull
Usage: 10 pulls

Secret Exit Lever
Effect: spawns another exit to the level somewhere
Usage: Once

Experience Lever
Pulling this lever gives you some experience

Warp lever

Time Dilation Lever
Effect: Stops time for everything in the room except yourself for 100 turns.
Usage: Once
Message: "You inexplicably take a step to the right."

You still take damage from lava/acid at the usual rate, time passes for you normally but all other monsters are Stopped In Their Tracks for up to 100 of your turns.  The time dilation bubble prevents other monsters from entering the bubble -- it also prevents you from leaving the room until the effect wears off.

Everything outside the time warp bubble operates normally.

Detonation Lever
Effect: Creates an explosion akin to a gasoline barrel.
Usage: Once.
Message: "THAT'S why it was ticking..."

Corpse Lever
Effect: Fills floor with blood and corpses, numbers and enemies calculated similar to Enemy Creation Lever, but slightly stronger. May only appear on levels with Arch-Viles.
Usage: Once.
Message: "The room is suddenly filled with the stench of death."


Some may view this lever as a bad idea or useless. I see several advantages with it. I would rather take on spawning corpses, instead of a room-full of lava. I would like to have a lever (and possibly level feeling) that indicates the existence of Arch-Viles on the the level. I would rather take on a slowly-spawning room of corpses, versus filling the room with enemies in all directions that will begin full-on attack in 4 seconds. The lever has risks and rewards.

Jail lever
Effect: First pull creates a 1block thin wall around you. Second pull deals damage and destroyes one block.
Usage: 2
Message: "Sonnova...!"

Adrenaline lever
Effect: Free berserk!
Usage: 1
Message: "You're suddenly filled with rage!"


Recycling lever
Effect: Breaks all items in the room.
Usage: 1
Message: "You hear weird grinding sound!"


Ammo debosit lever
Effect: Gives you ammo for the weapon you're currently wearing ( 30 - 80mm, 20 - 40 shell, 2 - 5 rockets, 10 - 30 cell)
Usage: 1 - 3
Message: "Welcome to ammo debosit! Dispensing ammonition.."


Reinforcer lever
Effect: Turns the walls of the level/room indestructable
Usage: 1
Message: "The walls suddenly turn thicker"

Mind Control Lever
Effect: Marks point on <20 distance from the player and forces him to walk there.
Usage: 3 times
Message: "You feel controlled"

Random lever
Effect: Activates a random lever on the level, then translocates itself somewhere
Usage: Infinite
Message:"You hear a lever pulled somewhere on the level"

Archimede's Lever
Effect: Allows you to push enemies, walls, doors and barrels around.
Usage: 3 times
Message: "Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the Earth."

Gives you a choice to activate a nuclear bomb, and if you say no, then the lever disappears.

Acid/Lava pours from the ceiling!
Creates acid/lava as if a barrel exploded, without doing explosion damage. Flying enemies (or players) take damage if an environmental hazard is generated under them, since it falls on top of them. A weaker version of "fills room with acid/lava" that doesn't require the lever to be in a room.

Would be cooler if it went to a secret bonus level, then the next level. Even just an easter egg with no enemies.
EDIT: I see now, that would be a gift from the RNG, for AoPc. Quick escape, AND an extra level for faster level-up! I like the idea more now!

Just a quick note : this is a really helpful topic indeed, so please post your ideas -- they will probably be used in the next version!

Although I must say that joke levers are out of the question, so please find interesting ideas gameplay-wise ;>

Bill and Ted's Excellent Lever, by the way, was a nonsensical poke of fun at all the names people are assigning to levers which will never have names (gosh I hope. I'm bad with names. Did I just pull Michael or Frank? Akward...)

The idea, however, I think has merit as an actual lever effect. Maybe give it higher chances to spawn on AoPc as well, thus giving you even more options to gamble your pacifistic life away.

Side note afterthought: If you pull a lever that damages enemies on AoPc, do you spend a couple of turns weeping about their pain or something? It seems only fair, seeing as you're such a pansy pacifist.

Well, if they wanna stand next to a barrel, in a place where lava/acid might spawn, or in a room with a kill lever, it's their own damn fault. It's not like you'd know before hand what the lever would do.

Ammo Depot- Spawns a full (as in, as much as can fill an inventory slot) stack of a random ammo type.

Flood lever:
"This level looks like a maze of pipes"
Floods a random room/rooms (not the one you are in) with water, acid, lava or blood.

Shock lever:
"Your hair stands!"
Paralyzes you for a random number of turns. If you have intuition, then it paralyzes all the monsters in the room, but not you.

Teleport level:
Teleports you to a random location. If you have intuition, it teleports you over the exit.

Opens all doors on level; 1 use, dangerous. No message.

Opens all doors on level on first use, closes all doors on second use, monsters caught in closing doors are gibbed instantly; 2 uses, beneficial. No message.

Creates up to 5 closed doors in legal spaces (space is orthogonally adjacent to exactly two walls on opposite sides, not orthogonally adjacent to another door, and does not contain a monster or non-corpse item); 1-3 uses, beneficial. Message: "You hear gears grind briefly, then stop."

Generates a 3x3 square of monsters at a random location out of LoS; 1-3 uses, neutral. Message: "You suddenly hear anguished moans in the distance..."

Restores 20 hp, up to 200%, and restores status to 'cautious'; 1 use, beneficial, only appears in Hell. Message: "A harsh red light surrounds you. You feel reinvigorated!"

Destroys a section of wall in a random part of the level; 1 use, neutral. Message: "You hear the sound of crumbling bricks." Plays the gibbing sound centered on the effect.


Also, any lever that creates objects in the room should have the message, "A secret is revealed!"

Effect: For every killed enemy on this level a LS appears in the starting point of the lever. Shotgun recomended for the N!

The problem with levers is that we have enough negative effects already :P. Also, there should be an inclination to pull levers BEFORE finishing/clearing the level. Any ideas?

Positive levers?
Allright.

Hidden weapon lever

Effect: Spawns a random weapon in the room you're currently in! Ranges from regular to exotic (no uniques)
Usage: Once
Message: A hidden weapon suddenly appears from the floor.

Inceneration Ammo Lever
Effect: Your current weapons ammo is reloaded with incenerative, which causes any killed by them to leave no corpse for that clip.
Usage: 1 - 3
Message: "Lovely smell of napalm emits from your gun"

"Let them come to you" Lever
Effect: Pulls 3 - 5 random items from the level next to you
Usage: 1
Message: Magnetic hum fills the level.

Vampire lever
Effect; Your attacks that kill enemies heal you for 3 health each, last till the end of level. Stacks with Vampyre
Usage: 1
Message; You're filled with the lust for blood!

If I am to risk using a lever before a level is cleared, there should be a chance that a lever will clear it for me.
That is why I suggest simply:
Death to the damned
Effect: Kills all the remaining enemies on the level.
Message: Suddenly all the monsters fall dead.

I would also suggest adding a lever that, after using, gives a new unique item, unavailable by other means. This could offset the risk and reward those who play slots in DoomRL.

as has been brought up before, the presence of the flood room with acid/lava levers (no warnings) make pulling levers far too dangerous on uncleared levels, most of the time.

now to be more constructive.
  • Spawn a unique somewhere on the level.  1 use. "You sense the presence of something really valuable hidden here!"
  • Convert a random wall into fuel barrels.  1 use, no level feeling.
  • Tell you how to wield the bloody Dragonslayer ("A mysterious phrase appears on the wall: Drink milk to become stronger")
  • For the next X turns, monsters run away from you (and run away from the map centre - moving backwards in general) "You feel a constant fear that something's always there."  When using the lever, "You feel the light begin to change".  OK, those quotes are perhaps too silly.  Reversed monster movement could be good though

Wow, long time no see, Derek :)

This sounds not really worth it though, unless it gives you some sort of adrenaline shot or something. The lever puts you in a mode for some time (cancelled if you pressed the run button again) which makes you run super fast. Effect could be considered both positive and negative since you'll have amazing speed & dodge, but horrible accuracy. Could be handy for AoB, AoPc, etc.

In fact, now that I'm thinking of it, maybe this could work as an item too? Steroids or something? :P

In fact, now that I'm thinking of it, maybe this could work as an item too? Steroids or something? :P
So we are starting to pull in some of the ideas from Duke Nukem 3D now?  =P  Actually let's make it even more polarised -- you gain massive speed, but you are more vulnerable (incur a -1 to armour) due to your recklessness.  This is deliberately the opposite effect of Berserk, since that one increases your armour rating but removes your speed by banning you from running.

Well I think it is doable, but it really depends on how much of the Doom universe Kornel wants to maintain.  If the objective now is to get 1.0 out of the door, then maybe we can keep the steroid idea for DoomRL 2 (having steroids in DoomRL may tilt the game in a completely different way, possibly negating the effects of fast monsters on the higher difficulties).

The whole idea of staying in the Doom universe is already kinda ruined anyway.
I mean, if there's the combat translocator from Unreal Tournament and even anime elements, why the heck not include something from Doom's quite close cousin Duke3D?

Wasn't there an adrenaline injector in Doom 3 that did just that - gave you unlimited stamina for a short while?

Yep.
Thus, nothing wrong with a stamina lever nor steroid pill/injection pack to be honest.

Honestly I don't think there's much balance issue in it at all.
If it's a lever, there's only a small chance to actually get it as a lever at all.
In N! it would be a god send, just like a lever to flood the level with water, which considering N! is even more OP.

Now saying this from experience; Most of the N! deaths are usualy caused when you can't dodge anymore. Running out of run state. Berserk poofed off. Healing while running and getting run state turned off.

Now, if it were a pill carriable, it might have some balance issue, but then again, it could be exotic, or have setbacks to make it less reliable.

As a lever, I see no issues with it.

Belt lever
Uses: 1
Effect: Infinite ammo for one ammo type while you stand on the lever square. Probability is as such:
Clip:50%
Shell:30%
RocketAmmo:5%
Cell:15%
Leave the lever square and the effect will 'turn off'. In-game, the belt pops out of the ceiling when you pull the lever, and when you leave, the belt snakes back into the ceiling. For plasma, assume a power cable.

Pull description:

    print("A power cable falls from the ceiling, and you plug it into your weapon.")
else:

+6 levers? Too easy to get wossaname-25-levers-badge. But minigame idea is good. My add:

Instant exit level
Presence text: "You feel there's a shortcut somewhere."
Anctivation text: "To the hell all this! I go out!"
Uses: 1, of course.
You remember that some levels in Doom was finished with lever/button/something activation? I just remembered, heh.
