Firstly, I had been having bad luck with all kinds of drops, so I decided to firebomb my install for awhile; that is why it is labeled as my first play and first death in the mortem.
Onto the game. I have gotten tired of mostly going for MAc, which still seems unbalanced and akin to cheating IMO. I liked Intuition, so I decided to make a build for that. Truly, this build was quite good, and played really well. I had some ammo and inventory challenges, but it was fun to survive off the equipment I found, instead of just finding a plasma rifle and modding it to max damage.
The beginning of the game was quite reasonable, and had a few great levels (one with probably 5 mods on the ground, which really helped). The biggest challenge point early on was the Wall, where I was running low on ammo. In the levels before, I had to fight through an Arachno cave and a Caco cave, which drained my ammo down. I destroyed the Wall on the outside, and let the Barons cluster up and hit many with the missile launcher (having found it a few levels before, great find). Found the Onyx mod (great since I had horrible luck in games before), which I kept until I found a red Armor (I think Hellgate).
The rest of the game played out well, I took minimal damage with Red Armor OP (what ironic mod letters), and survived often by the weapons and ammo I found on the ground. I was probably storing up too many health packs, but they would come in handy in a way.
Eventually got to an arena, cleared it out, and was faced with the choice of entering the Mortuary. I figured I had enough weapons, ammo, and great armor, so I did. The area became incredibly full of enemies in just a few turns. I healed, and began the following turn with probably 88% health. I decided to try a phase device, got hit before and after phasing, and died in a single turn, with 6 point of armor. That is ridiculous.
So, I have been thinking about it. DoomRL just seems to stress me out, consume my time, and frustrate me. It requires high luck and many playthroughs, which I am not doing to well with. The only ways I can really win are by devoting hours and days of game time, or using tricks like MAc. Either way, the sense of satisfaction is limited. I know that Rougelikes are intended to be mind-bleedingly hard, but that is not what I am in the mood for anymore. Sad to say, I think I am done with DoomRL. It was fun, but I have lost most of my ability to enjoy it.
thelaptop:
A pity. There's so much to be done in DoomRL...
...now try some of the other rogue-likes that Chaosforge has. (=
ChaoticJosh:
It's not a good idea to devote too much of your time to anything.
But anyway, there's no such thing as entering the Mortuary without a BFG and tons of plasma cells. The BFG blasts will destroy the corpses on the ground, deal tons of damage, and will hopefully render the Archviles impotent enough to allow you to break through their ranks and got to a corner. I remember one run that necessitated five BFG shots just for killing the archviles of one side of the Mortuary. That was just survival, not victory. If you want to win in the Mortuary, you're going to need a FRESH berserk or invulnerability globe before entering, along with something insanely powerful weaponry.
Game Hunter:
My only runs into the Mortuary thus far (only HNTR) involved either Ammochain, AoMC, or AMPLE cells and rockets (talking six slots of cells, four of rockets, and Backpack'd). Frankly, even on HNTR one should be ridiculously prepared for it, it's just that frustrating. Although it's hard to state that as your reason for dying, 'cause you were definitely ready enough if we're just talking ammo. Some tips I can think of:
- Grab a supercharge if you need it, then get the hell out of the center. Typically I have BFG ready upon entering and (preferably) any kind of phases. Running helps a good lot until you can reach the left or right edge.
- It takes ~20 turns (2.0 seconds) before Arch-viles can react (which usually involves moving first anyway), so feel free to pelt them with a blast from the get-go. In this version it has the added benefit of removing a boatload of corpses.
- You're relatively safe once you reach a corner (or left/right sides): with Intuition you should be able to send rockets into the distance, with BFG ready in case anything big starts to show up. After you can set yourself up in a defensive position, it's simply a game of ammo conservation (or, in Ammochain, a test of patience).
Could be me, but I think BFG shots can't go farther than your field of vision without exploding now. Perhaps the precise targeting has returned?
All in all it looked like a great run ruined by the omnipotence of the Mortuary. I've found that, while luck plays a part, high luck isn't necessary until around platinum badges. With enough practice (although I suggest taking a long break until you feel like playing again) you'll find the game gets easier.
action52:
The mortuary IS ridiculous. Everyone says so. Pretty much every spoiler out there tells you the reward is not worth it, and to stay the hell out of the Mortuary unless you're specifically going for a Reaper badge. Even then, it's probably better to wait until you get lucky enough to have an invincibility or berserk powerup spawned near the entrance. I personally have never been there, because I never want to risk it when I'm so close to the end. But when I do go, I am just going to assume I will die and consider myself really lucky if I make it through.
If you hadn't gone into the Mortuary, I have no doubt you would have won--the Cyberdemon is a piece of cake by comparison.
It's not hard to believe that you would die in one round, even as strong as you were. Just do the math--you could potentially come out in a spot with 20 or more demons surrounding you--that includes Arachnotrons, former commandos, Hell Knights, and Barons, all of which will instantly target you when you teleport into their midst. Now if I were in your position, I could easily see myself feeling cocky and doing the exact same thing you did. I would have felt like an idiot afterwards, of course, but it wouldn't be the stupidest thing I've done. Not even close.
Anyway, if you think you're playing too much of this game lately, by all means take a break. You shouldn't let a game take up too much of your time. But I hope you don't quit because you think this game is too hard. You were actually doing very good--you just walked into a spot that is intentionally made ridiculously hard.
Feel free to stop DoomRL and try out other games, though. Have you considered trying other roguelikes? You may come back later thinking this is a cakewalk by comparison. ;)
