Wolf RL?

That's right, Wolfenstein RL.

I know I'll probably never see it, and I'm not sure why I'm so gun-ho about it, since it's essentially a dumbed-down version of Doom RL, but I still want it.  Perhaps if one of us could get our hands on the Doom RL source code (wink wink, nudge nudge) this could happen.

What I see would make this different from Doom is there would be more stealth and conservation of ammo (there is only one type of ammo here!)  Does anyone remember the really, really old version of Wolfenstein, before it was 3D?  You had limited ammo and a few grenades, so you had to use your wits.  I guess what I want to see is the original Wolfenstain plus the features and enemies implemented by Wolfenstain 3D.

This is what I see as far as enemies:

Guard: Your average Former Human.  I remember from the game he went down with a single bullet -- That's my kind of enemy!

SS Troop: The Former Human Sergeant or Captain with a sub-machine gun.  A bit more health.

Dog: Basically an itty-bitty demon.  Isn't it cute?  Also goes down with a bullet.

Mutant: Two pistols, fast firing rate; my childhood memories of these guys were painful.

Bosses: Remember the big beefy guys with grappling guns for hands?  They could easily replace Hell Knights and Barons.  Only every couple levels, mind!

I'm sure there were more.  I think there might have been ninjas for some reason, as well as Hitler-ghosts and the Fueher himelf in his little robot suit!

In Wolf 3D, there were only three guns and a knife, as well as only one type of ammo.  The origianl non-3d Wolf had grenades as well.  Like I said before, maybe this one would rely a bit more on strategy than running in guns-a-blazing, since Guards and Dogs both easily fell to a single bullet each.

Anywho, I'm starting to ramble, so I'll throw this topicopen for discussion.  I know I probably won't see this happen, at least not here, but tell me what you think!

Kornel, I demand that you start working on Carceri!

Seriously though, here is a review of that old, old Wolfenstein I mentioned.  If you want to play it, you need to download DOSbox first.

Shhhh! Don't disturb him! He has to finish DoomRL 0.9.9 and DiabloRL 0.5.0 first!

``id'' wanted to create an aliens3d, but by questions of copyrights, they could not do it; so, instead of wolfRL, aliensRL!

To tease you a little, here are some points from the ABRL design doc:
* directional line of sight (so you don't know if someone sneaks up from behind)
* enemies -- military robots gone wild and aliens (facehuggers, traditional, doglike, queen, invisible stalkers, etc)
* a black-green-gray style of the UI
* random tower layout (basing on Tower Assault)
* each tower with a different theme
* many weapons, each with a unique effect - pistol, shotgun, assault rifle, flamer
* cybernetics and terminal hacking

Ech...

howdee, i'm not very technical, etc etc
But I signed up here just to say I think wolfenstein is a far far better idea, i'm so nostalgic over that game - its just cute, lets face it, stealing nazi gold is far more amusing than killing aliens (although that is amusing also)

ok thats all :)
just wanted to put my vote in, since i'm lacking the technical skills to actually do anything about it myself!
Thanks!

And I think it would fit nicely into the ASCII genre. Especialy Wolf3d with it's square shaped levels.

Wolfenstein defined the entire genre of FPS's.  What better form to immortalize it than ASCII?

I have always thought a WolfRL would be awsome, if you could sneak up on guards, and stuff.

I actually created a boardgame like that once, it was fun, really difficult for the escapee, but fun.

I would love to see Wolf as a RL, i am glad someone other than me thinks the same!

Yeah i do have the rules, for the board i had a gigantic graph paper which i cut up into rooms of varying sizes, i printed off some guards and stuff, all using the old wolf3d graphics. Its just homemade, so its not the fanciest, or most balanced, but it is fun.

The escapee almost always loses, just like in real life :)

I could send you the token pages and rules if i can find them on my PC.

Dont get mad at him Margo, it uses to happen! One tends to overlook what is more important for one self.

Specially when personal hobbies, like roguelikes are involved (yep yep... it happens to me a lot :D)

So I see that my dear poor little Kornel has his own personal spokesman ^_^. I'm afraid it won't help him much. Better advice him Slash, which flowers should he buy me tommorow. Otherwise he can't count on forbearance. And the nervous RLdeveloper amounts to NOT THE MOST EFFECTIVE RLdeveloper. Do you really want that, guys? ^_^

I have thunk, and thought and done many other things, and i have decided

WolfRl could be done by your truly

Remember though
Im 15 with no coding experience whatsoever

I plan to use either
Visual Basic (my freind knows some, w00t)
or Freepascal

However, i must inquire, what is ValkaiteCMS library (or similar)
would it be easy to use?

I did half of a Design Doc for this and so far i have these "features"

-Weapons of diffrent strength (persay, 1 pistol might have 4 attack, whilst another might have 5, and so on)

-7 or 8 diffrent enemies, and 3 diffrent bosses (30 levles altogether)

-6 Weapons (i beleive)

3-5 Diffrent Level types

-2 diffrent ways to play, you could go stealth, or Gunz-a-blazin'

Definetly some sort of alarm system.

so, there you have it, if someone can point me to some sort of coding engine i can easily learn and use, i will create said roguelike (by Create i mean start and PROBABLY not finish.)

If Kornel or anyone else completes it before i do, good idea, id much rather play it than create it, as i have other, more important things to do (such as Homework!)

Thanks all

I admire your gumption (whatever that is), but I have a few ideas from I had from studying the game for the last couple days.

1.  The Pistol, Machine Gun, and Caingun all used the same ammo and dealt the same damage.  The only thing that changed was the rate of fire.

2. In the original, non-3d WOlfenstein, there were grenades and enemy uniforms you could wear.

3. In the Mac version of Wolf 3D, there were two extra weapons- the flame thrower, which ran on gas, and the rocket launcher, which used rockets.

Also, I'm gonna repost a link Kornel gave me.
http://www.wolfenstein3d.co.uk/enemies.htm

And here is one I found.
http://www.mac-archive.com/wolfenstein/index.html

Question, what enemies are you thinking about?  Because I can only think of 5 different enemies -- the rest are bosses and special level enemies.

i was thinking of making it with a few more enemies and weapons for the sake of variety

For enemies i was thinking prison guard, Brownshirt Guard, Guard Dog, SS Guard, SS stormtrooper, and zombies.

The prison guard is a weaker version of the Brownshirt, and the SS guard is an actual guard, whereas the SS stromtrooper will storm the level if an alarm is set off

as for weapons, i was looking at pistol Machinegun, Chaingun (of course) With a Kar98k, Sturmrifle, and Grenades

I own the original game, i should be fine, i just wanted to have more variety. Im planning on having the same ammo for Pistol Machinegun and Chaingun, and the same ammo for Kar98k and the sturmrifle (Sturmrifle is the first ever assault rifle btw)

I also have the original non 3d Wolfenstein.

Im not sure about uniforms, im thinking no, the only way you could get them is off a dead guard, and to get them you have to kill him, and i think people would notice a bit stab rip in the uniform ;)

As for bosses, i plan to have Hans Gross, Dr. Shcabbs and Hitler, there will be 3 "episodes" of 10 levels each, im not sure about secret levels.

No lives, 1 death only

For level types im planning
1. Jail
2.Generic "castle"
3. Armory
4. Kitchen
5. Lab

I wouldnt recommend Visual Basic

what is ValkaiteCMS library

ValkirieCMS is a top-notch web tool used to generate high quality roguelike websites..

.. now... 'Carceri' is (will be?) a data driven roguelike engine which I hope doesnt get corrupted by unneeded LUA crap, with which you will be able to create all sorts of fun themed roguelikes without needing to code.

brainwave people, somehow get the alex the kid music/backing track as the soundtrack...

doesn't exactly fit, but it could be passed off as some sort of artistic statement about being desensitised to violence through playing rl games which treat people as objects....

thats deep

and we get to enjoy alex the kid!

(and i am sooo about to get myself flamed out of this programmer's forum, excellent work)

Which program do i download?

As for damage, im thiking that if you score a hit, it will say which bit of the body you hit, and deal damage accordingly
