This was the tutorial I used to learn how to play Dwarf Fortress. I'd say it took me around ten hours to have a vague idea what I was trying to do, about twenty to get a bit more comfortable and at thirty hours I realized that I had been playing a game for thirty hours straight and that it was time to go to bed. The next ~3-4 months were a blur of flowing magma, drowning traps, goblin sieges and the like. I think after I completed the door bell (pressure plates that instantly caused a repeatable cave-in) I was able to set the game down for a bit.

Haven't played the new version (still waiting for the OpenGL/Linux version) but the tutorial should be close enough. Definitely worth the learning curve. I think the mechanics system is the most fun.
