[U|72%|Win] Re-learning how to win UV, also pistols.
« on: October 09, 2010, 07:56 »

--------------------------------------------------------------
DoomRL (v.0.9.9.1) roguelike post-mortem character dump
--------------------------------------------------------------

Thomas, level 10 Hell Baron Colonel, defeated the Cyberdemon
on level 25 of the Phobos base.
He survived 74087 turns and scored 175234 points.
He played for 1 hour, 15 minutes and 50 seconds.
He was a man of Ultra-Violence!

He killed 426 out of 585 hellspawn. (72%)
This was 100% up until Hellgate. I mean, I could've MGKed my way through it,
but by god that vile would've chewed through my billion large medpacks.
He was an Angel of Marksmanship!

-- Awards ----------------------------------------------------

  Hell Champion Medal
  Marksman Gold Badge

Another gold under my belt. If only I could remember how to beat nightmare.
I only need one more platinum for the next rank, and yet all of a sudden I'm terrible at getting them!

I kept the minigun as a reminder to thank the RNG for helping me in my time of need.
I don't think I ever fell below 200 bullets anyway, but it's the thought that counts.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 283 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 246 of those were killed.
4 of those were killed by something unknown.
2 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 13 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 18 souls claim to have killed him...
2 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
16 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Things learned about pistol games (This is pretty much my first serious one, considering I attempt Nightmare Shotgun and Rapidfire runs regularly)

1. Gun Kata: Free reloads are awesome, free shots are kind of cool.
2. Hellgate is about as bad as people say, but fighting viles without cover is something that no build can do. It is not a problem with the pistols. I didn't kill anything in hellgate, I just phased the heck out of there and dodgemastered past the bruisers.
3. Free shots are "kind of cool" because they are based entirely on dodgemaster, a trait which is both overpowered and underpowered. Of course, you're going to feel like a badass when you clear a room of mancubi without taking damage, but some enemies (even commandos/arachs in some cases) just don't give no fucks.
4. Dodgemaster seems to work on like 5/6 of arachnotron shots. Great, until they wittle you down to 20% HP and you suddenly need to stand still and heal.
5. Maybe it's time for a change in the final boss? He's never been particularly difficult for any build, and the problem is no lost souls. Seriously, spawn in lost souls every few seconds, and the fight becomes interesting and difficult. (Nerf cyberdemon damage/HP as necessary)
6. Hahahahaha the cyberdemon ran out of rockets I had to run away before he oneshotted me with his giant fists
7. Oh god level 22 was a pain elemental cave I was just about to start crying until I saw the stairs several steps away from my spawn
(Also I guess I had 3 homing phases but like hell I remember to use consumables EVER)

If you're trying to remember 0.9.9, forget it: the difference in speed killed any chance of turning it into a hit-and-run UV with better healing. N! is a whole new game these days...

Hellgate is about as bad as people say, but fighting viles without cover is something that no build can do. It is not a problem with the pistols. I didn't kill anything in hellgate, I just phased the heck out of there and dodgemastered past the bruisers.
AoMr (as well as AoB and AoPc) lack the ability for the player to use a certain weapon that makes it easier. I may as well warn you that it doesn't help much on N!, though.
This is why I don't recommend MGK for the higher difficulties. Since DM is no longer a free dodge on every hit (due to a bug, I suppose), those multi-hit enemies are suddenly not as easy, and the +2-to-hit can make your innate dodging, even while side-stepping and HRx2 added, not nearly adequate. Kinda makes me wish there was a 0/0 armor that increased dodging (hell, I believe there's one in the exotic/unique thread, ninja garb or somethin').
5. Maybe it's time for a change in the final boss? He's never been particularly difficult for any build, and the problem is no lost souls. Seriously, spawn in lost souls every few seconds, and the fight becomes interesting and difficult. (Nerf cyberdemon damage/HP as necessary)
Seconded, though even a static spawn on Lost Souls would be adequate. In addition, the player himself should spawn in a random location, just like the Cyberdemon.

Congrats on the UV AoMr, no easy task. Good luck on your N! runs, you'll need it. (Seriously. I AM NOT JOKING HERE)

Mm. I did clear out the Halls of Carnage before hellgate, so obviously if I had a BFG and a decent amount of armour (plus the 400 cells that all the damn arachnotrons gave me) I'd be able to do it. But even with a BFG, fighting viles in the open is just so stupid.

Actually, it wasn't so bad. In the arachnotron caves, the first levels I got to do with MGK, the only problems were getting out of the centre of the cave and healing up after they'd got several lucky shots on me over the course of 100 turns. And of course, barons and mancubi just become chumps once you have MGK.

So it's really pretty useful, and a lot more fun than your average "Rapidfire: The 2 pistols version" build.

An exotic/unique that increases dodging would be pretty cool, but if we did get one then we'd also need a regular item that does it. You can't just say "Oh yeah active defense is a possibility on Nightmare! now that we have a 1 in 50 shot at getting the Ninja Garb"
