I'm not sure if this should be in bug reports, please move it if need be.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 84 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 73 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
3 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 5 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 2 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
1 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

It was a standard ammochain run with some very odd luck

I intentionally used 2 lava level levers because I had envirsuit packs (can you say no to a free floor of exp?)

I had gotten an inv globe right next to the stairs for the Mortuary so I went down and BFG'd the left and laser rifled the rest for an easy clearing.

The odd bug is that I was able to fight JC without killing the Cyberdemon.  A random pull of the hell staff sent me to the stairs to 26.  I lost the fight and it gave me the death by sacrifice ending sequence but the game did not count it as a win.  Apparently for a game to count for badges and such the Cyberdemon must die...

That is indeed an odd bug.  I think that you were lucky that the Hell Staff decided to send you to the stairs, since it is technically a free space.

This is an interesting question: if we had Phase Devices and used them indiscriminately, can we replicate what you have found?

not so lucky, I needed that win for the badges and it didn't count...

I think you can, the hell staff just uses the phase device code, right?

Hmm, logically the stair 'square' is just an empty space with the ability to go down a floor, so using phase devices would be able to get you to the stairs albeit with such a rare chance it might be hard with cybie baring down on you. If i've read the wiki right, perhaps you could create a level with walls surrounding lots of stairs and lay down lots of phase devices?

on second thought, a homing phase would do the same job, since it takes you to the stairs - can you use those on the cyberdemon level? As much as it sucks to miss out on badges and a win it might help kornel?

The strange thing is that I think the Homing Phase Device is explicitly banned from jumping to that stairs.  I can risk my current run and try it out.

Ed: Yep, Homing Phase Device is explicitly banned from getting to the stairs to JC.
