Bug: Destroyed Staircase? [NOT A BUG]

I'm pretty sure that the last game I had done, I somehow blew up a staircase with an exploding barrel.  Is this supposed to happen?  Note that I could go to Hell's Arena, but I couldn't use a regular staircase.

Maybe it was covered with one item or another, it happens (and you won't get *stairway is here* message when standing there). Have you tried walking away (so that item would disappear from sight)? Or maybe you have Intuition\Computer map bonus?

Staircases are a tile with no damage resistance, so they can't be destroyed. It's probably what Igor wrote.
