Sorry to spoil you the secret (Bah, it's not that it's like the DS, because it's on the wiki, anyways), but the easy way into the vaults is by using the AMS.

Are you serious? Man, now I feel bad. I kinda spoiled it pretty hard. But since the only thing that seems truly guarded is the Dragonslayer...

Meh, it's no biggie...  I kind of figured the AMS had some use beyond the more obvious one, especially in light of the fact that I keep seeing "Arena key" show up in other people's mortems.
