Have you considered rendering a more complex scene?  You seem to focus heavily on macro shots, maybe something with a larger field might help with training your eye for shadows and posing?

How's this laptop? I used an instance of one of the foes on the ground level which is why they have the same pose.

Ooo definitely a different feel!  Still a little too macro for what I had in mind, but it is definitely more varied than before.  I think you should do more of these types if you can -- really helps with letting you explore more on scene composition.

Here's the result of some experimenting with the use of instances, and lighting. So you know, an instance is basically a clone of the source model. You make a change of any kind to the source, and it reflects on the instance(s).
