I still love this message. Kind of ironic when you have a homing phase, though.

You enter Phobos Hell, level 100.
You use a homing phase device. You feel yanked in an non-existing
direction! There are stairs leading downward here.
You did it! You completed 100 levels of DoomRL! You're the champion! Press

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 441 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 396 of those were killed.
4 of those were killed by something unknown.
2 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 16 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 23 souls claim to have killed him...
3 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
20 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Kornel likes to think that he's made Ao100 more fun and exciting. Well, he has to an extent, but by god it's still so ridiculously boring.

I went in there with the goal "UV Ao100 YAAM without master traits" but the YAAM part was dropped at level 25 for sanity-keeping reasons. Without MAD (which I wouldn't've gotten anyway because nothing blocks finesse and still gets picked by me) chewing through enemies, even with my ridiculous P3T2 combat shotgun, takes a long time. The hyperblaster could get rid of Bruisers and Shamblers in a single clip, so that would usually be what I use if I really have to fight one of them.

I did this game for three reasons, the centurial platinum badge and the experience medal, to see if it's still boring (it is) and to have some actual experience on the subject when talking to other players and writing my guide. I can now sum up the Ao100-specific features of the game thusly:

a) Once you've gone totally mad and are just running for the stairs every level, remember to stop for the occaisional ammo refill when you see a sergeant with a nearby arch-vile.
b) Once you have TaN 5, you are invincible. Viles, revenants and boss enemies may do up to 6% damage to someone with TaN 5 and Iro 3-5, so watch out for them when you're running around on red HP.
c) 1-25 are the same as normal, 25-50 is level 24 played 25 times in a row, 50-75 can actually get kind of hectic (Oh god watch out for nightmare arachnotron caves) 76-100 is somehow easy again. I guess boss enemies count as a lot of monsters when spawning, sucking up the vile count which is literally the only source of difficulty.
d) All extra enemies, by the time they have been introduced, are just annoying wusses with the exception of the cyberdemon. But he fears lava (for some reason) so he's not as annoying as bruisers and shamblers.

Looks like modding assemblies is STILL bugged...anyway.

I dunno, maybe it was because I wasn't playing an ultra-defensive build that just ran for the stairs, but there's definitely some tension once you get to about floor 40 and keeps building until the end. What I mean is, if you're playing to WIN, you're not necessarily playing to have fun. It's true of any challenge mode and A100 is no exception. Good to see you didn't pick Int2 though, that really drains the anticipation of enemy-spotting.

Agreed that shamblers/LEs really don't seem like more than meat shields, but I think the AI just needs tweaking so that they try and actually attack more often. Nightmare arachs are certainly a real pain, and nightmare viles are probably really nasty (I've only seen one and I zerked it to death, so not much data there).

I find A100 more interesting than a standard game in general because the special levels are all the same and quite repetitive when you're doing them for the 100th time. 100 randomized floors (especially with the new features) keeps you on your toes a lot moreso. On the other hand, if you're not the kind of person to to play much longer than an hour, which is the average time for a standard game, yeah, it'll get tedious. I already tend to play for hours at a time, so doing it in a single run works for me, and all the new additions make it a lot more exciting.

I'm probably going to aim for a shotty/melee hybrid on my next UV A100. Already got decent ground on one run gone bad by some unfortunate knockback (probably should've made those grappling boots) so I think it's possible. N! A100 by comparison, I imagine, is far less boring because it's always really easy to die on N!.

Looks like a great run, congrats on the Centurial Plat.
