First attempt at UV in the new version.

Hell Arena -> easy, especially with cshotgun & power mod a few steps from stairs into it.

Chained Court -> here the problem begins.

Any bright ideas on how to efficiently tackle Chained Court/Arena Master in UV mode? I decided to just pick saw+2 zerks, and run head-first towards predicted <A> position. Sure it worked, but costed me all medkits and health going down to really low values, which then got me killed on the next level (a few steps away from the intuition-detected zerk pack). Also,<A> was dying really slow from cshot[P], so finished him with chainsaw -> seemed to go faster.

Apart from that - do you think it's a valid tactic on UV to go for the SoG->SoG->EE->EE->Int->Int->Fin->Fin->Wiz and then assemble assault rifle? The plan was to go sniping for the rest of the game. Should i maybe drop the initial SoG, to reach Int2 earlier? Any thoughts on such build, in UV environment?

For the UV CC, I generally grab one of the 'zerk sources then run out the back. During that berserk I do my best to push as many Barons into lava as I can to ditch their corpses. Before that completely runs out (or after if I can survive), I go grab another one. I start shooting in the dark with a shotgun and when I finally see the Vile I blast it with the rocket launcher. The important part isn't to have a long continuous berserk, it is to be berserked against the B's and V. Sometimes I can clear the level with just using two of them leaving the third for a full heal at the end. It won't leave you berserked for the next level at all, but health is nice.

Personally I would go EEx2, Intx2 first, then grab the needed Fin/Wizkid/SoB. Starting with EEx2 means the chaingun actually hits things and isn't worthless unmodded, but if you can get an early PB mods then definitely slap them on your chaingun in that order. 1d9x4 with EEx2 using 10mm is nothing to scoff at, since bullets are cheap in the beginning. It will take down Barons in under a clip if memory serves me correctly, although that could be with a level of SoB or two.

I wouldn't recommend SoG if you are going for the assault rifle, since it's not a pistol and doesn't get the benefit. I'd go with SoB since it works on every weapon and with EEx2 your plasma/chaingun are going to be accurate making each point of SoB worth at least 2-3 damage extra damage. It may not sound like much, but something about how armor reduces damage and makes it worth it. Game Hunter probably has a much better idea, I haven't paid too much attention to how damage is actually calculated.

My last single pistol build was actually EE->EE->Int->Int->SoB->SoB->Fin->Fin->WK->Jug->SoG->Fin->WK->SoG->SoG->SoG->SoG->HR->HR->HR->SoB->SoB->SoB->DM. Notice that it took me a while to start getting SoG, but once I could I grabbed them all. I find that pistols are awesome when you have a great number of traits to back them up, but they are harder to start with. Granted that was an Ao100 game but still UV. For a 25 UV run I wouldn't bother with a single pistol since there isn't enough xp to get the traits to really make it worth it.

Thanks for tips! I'll definitely try your approach to CC next time.

I wouldn't recommend SoG if you are going for the assault rifle, since it's not a pistol and doesn't get the benefit.

This was of course mistake on my part - i wrote SoG but ment SoB, as it was stated in the mortem.

The reason i started with SoB was to actually have some punch with shotty while building up skills for a proper chain-ripping.

Which actually brings an interesting question - around which time (skill-wise) chainguns start outperform combat shotguns against enemies like knights/barons. 1EE? 2EE? What if you got SoB?

The way I tackle CC+ on a manly difficulty is by clearing the back, agility modding my rocket launcher, THEN going berserk. Picking them all up at once means no free full heals for later, so that's generally a bad idea.

I generally just push barons in to the lava when opportunities present themselves as I'm taking out the front, but this is more out of laziness than a tactical decision.

As for chainguns, my experience is:

No traits: Completely useless
EE1: Worse than carrying around 5 shotguns.
EE2: Comparable to 5 shotguns, worse than combat shotgun.
SoB1: Comparable to 5 shotguns, worse than combat shotgun.
SoB2: Comparable to combat shotgun.
EE1, SoB1: Comparable to combat shotgun.
EE1, SoB2: Better than combat shotgun.
TH: Better than combat shotgun.

Of course, getting SoB 2 is like adding 2 power mods to your combat shotgun (+1 without damage dropoff is about as good as +1d3 with damage dropoff), so even with EE 1 and SoB 2 you can sometimes find the combat shotgun to be better.

These days I rarely find myself using a chaingun unless I've got triggerhappy 2 or I'm about level 5-6 on my way to cateye.

Ha, using the advice from this thread i pulled a second cateye-to-be on UV. Cleared the back of the CC, pushing barons into lava (too bad one well-aimed shot from one of them destroyed both leftover zerk packs). Then, abusing the fact that all other monsters converged in the middle, just unholstered a rocket-slinger and made mince-meat-pie out of V&Co. Int2 helped with that tremendously.

Then proceeded to die 2 levels below (and having acquired Fin too), due to bad corner-shooting management.

This was of course mistake on my part - i wrote SoG but ment SoB, as it was stated in the mortem.

The reason i started with SoB was to actually have some punch with shotty while building up skills for a proper chain-ripping.

You know, I should have been able to figure that out. I thought it was a little strange when I was typing it, but I was kinda tired and figured you knew something I didn't. Starting with SoB isn't a bad idea, the question I ask myself is do I feel lucky enough to find a combat shotgun? If I do then SoB is what I'll grab, otherwise I'll go EE. Actually the only three traits I'll ever grab on the first level are SoB, EE or brute for an N! vampyre run.

One reason in favor of EE and a chaingun is that there are certain corner shots that a shotgun can't make. On the other side of that coin there are plenty of reasons to use the combat shotgun as your main weapon and switch to a chaingun when needed. Even if I grab EEx2 then Intx2 for the first four traits I'll still use the combat shotgun over the chaingun despite the fact none of the traits are really for shotguns. And the combat shotgun + SoB = great crowd control. Unfortunately combat shotguns don't always spawn, but they usually do.

It's worth noting that with EEx2 if you are in a situation where you have to kill a baron and finding cover is impossible, I find it's better to chainfire it to death than to use the combat shotgun. With any amount of cover though, the combat shotgun with SoB is going to give you some knock back giving you quite the advantage over a baron, even more so with a single T mod on it. If I can actually make a high powered chaingun then I start using the combat shotgun for scouting and the chaingun for clean up.

So the condensed version becomes, carry a chaingun and a stack of bullets, but mainly use the combat shotgun and however many stacks of shells are needed.
