How did you deal with corpses? I'm new to N! (1 win, 60+ deaths heh) and I waste a lot of time pushing barrels to blow them up, so I was wondering what is the best way to do it. You finished really quickly (I need 1,5 to 2 hours on UV), so is it safe to assume that you just killed everything without stopping and left before anything had a chance to respawn?
My badges guide doesn't go over corpse-spawning in detail (given how much I've learned through some of these wins, I should probably update it). I'll try to explain some here, in the meantime.
There are a lot of ways to go about getting rid of corpses, but they can be divided into two main categories: killing an enemy such that a corpse won't spawn and disposing of the corpse once the enemy is already dead. Ideally you want to do the former as often as possible.
Examples of killing enemies to be corpseless:
- Killing enemies on top of fluid. This is probably the most common way to go about dealing with respawning, given the amount of fluid you can find on a given map. If the enemy isn't on fluid, shotguns and rocket launchers will knockback them back effectively to get them there. In addition, knocking enemies into acid or lava is a great way to kill them anyway, as they will either drown there (if there's no adjacent safe tiles) or continuously run to the safe tile, allowing you to perform a combo of death.
- Killing enemies on top of doors. This is what is used early on, although it has potential anywhere that has doors and enemies that don't avoid melee combat. Great for melee, not great for shotguns (since knockback makes it hard to keep them on the door), works well in combination with gift-dropping.
- Gibbing the enemy, which is simply killing the enemy so hard that they don't leave a corpse period. This requires an obscene amount of damage and is hard to pull off without melee with zerking. Rocket launchers can gib formers and imps, BFGs MIGHT gib things like Demons or Cacodemons. However, attempting to gib an enemy usually goes well in combination with splash-destroying corpses.
Examples of destroying corpses themselves:
- Killing enemies on top of corpses. This removes the corpse underneath the enemy you just killed, which is why it's considered corpse-destruction. Hard to pull off, best done without knockback (melee or rapid-fire weapons), useful in situations when you have time to thin the corpses out (ie, special maps).
- Destroying corpses with your splash weapons. Rocket launchers and BFGs do this job, and it's among the better ways to use your rockets in Nightmare! (the other being wall-busting). Napalm launchers throw fluid on the corpse, guaranteeing destruction. Gibbing with your splash damage is NOT guaranteed, unfortunately.
- Destroying corpses with enemies' splash weapons. Imps, HKs, and Cacodemons do this occasionally, Barons, Revs, and Viles do this consistently. If you have Fireangel, this is the best way to get rid of corpses and maneuver yourself across the level at the same time. Manucbi are hard to get to aim for one corpse, but if there are a lot of corpses then use it to your advantage.
I hope that helps, sklres.
