28 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 21 of those were killed.
And 3 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 4 souls destroyed the Cyberdemon...
4 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This was pretty much an entirely new experience for me.  This was my first:
  • win on HNTR
  • full win
  • Asskickin' Marine
  • visit to the Mortuary (and cleared it!)
  • visit to the Lava Pits (and cleared it!)
  • gold badge

Besides the Chained Court which I've been having trouble with since I upgraded from 0.9.9.2 to 0.9.9.4, the early game went pretty smoothly.  I found a room with two combat shotguns in a vault before I entered Hell's Arena.  The Wall was a bit sloppy, as usual for me, but it wasn't too bad.  My first big mistake was after I cleared Hell's Armory and I was applying an agility mod to make an assault rifle: I suddenly had the thought that I should wait until Whizkid 2 if I could so that I could add a mod to it, so I said no to building the assembly, not realizing that it would still use the mod.  I was mad enough that I almost quit, but I decided to carry on.  There were some minor tactical blunders occasionally, but it went pretty smoothly until the Hellgate.

At the Hellgate, I decided to copy what I'd first seen in one of Game Hunter's videos, blasting holes in the walls to kill the enemies instead of just unleashing them all at once (though I forgot the part where he unleashed one Bruiser Brother and took it out alone, which caused a little bit of pain).  In early Hell, my plasma rifle was still unmodded, and I didn't have any Eagle Eye yet, so I still primarily used my A3 chaingun and tactical shotgun.  I started slowly running out of ammo for my chaingun, but I was building up my plasma rifle slowly, so it started seeing more use as I went on and faced more armored enemies.  I accidentally skipped over the City of Skulls when I forgot there was a special staircase on that level, but I wasn't as angry about that because I knew I'd be skipping the Unholy Cathedral anyways, so I wasn't going to visit all the special levels anyways.  Then a bit later I found the Mortuary staircase...

Mortuary was actually really easy for me.  Of course, it really helped that I had a PB red armor (or it would have if I had taken any real damage), and a hatred skull that I used right after entering which gave me enough berserk to kill everything, plus a B3 BFG9000 with a lot of spare cells, though not as many as I'd thought, and I also had my missile launcher and some missiles as backup.  I took like 6% damage and my armor barely got a scratch, but I finished with around a stack of cells plus some change, and I was out of missiles.  I grabbed the nuclear BFG and power modded it (later I added a bulk mod because I had a bulk mod in my inventory), and I ditched the regular one due to insufficient cells.  Next came the Lava Pits.

I went into the Lava Pits with only a single envirosuit, which turned out to not last nearly long enough.  I had plenty of homing phase devices, so I could have escaped, but I wanted to keep my 100% kill rate.  No problem, I had about 9 large health packs to walk on lava with (and I ended up using three or four of them).  I never bothered to equip the Phaseshift boots (EDIT: I forgot they aren't uniques so it doesn't say in the mortem, but I found them in the Lava Pits), for no real reason except I didn't feel like it.  I cleared out the enemies with lots of shotgun blasts, then gave the lava elemental a little bit of plasma.  I used an envirosuit to get to the lava element, and since I'm stupid, rather than use one of my 3 homing phase devices, I decided that it would last long enough for me to walk to the stairs and I held down the direction key.  I got fairly singed, but luckily I didn't die.  I still had a few squares of lava left, so I had to use my homing phase device anyways (or I could've used the other envirosuit pack I got in that level, but I figured that might come in handy, which it did for simply navigating some lava near the end of the game, but I found another suit before then anyways as you can see in my inventory).

What with all the heavily armored enemies which my shotgun was worthless against, I ended up at the Phobos Arena with maybe 8 cells in my plasma rifle, and my new chaingun that I grabbed on level 24 since I had already ditched my A3 chaingun a little while back (shouldn't have even bothered; I tried blind firing at JC before I realized I was being stupid).  Nuke plus lava element equals full victory attempt!  I don't know if it's intentional, but JC never moved an inch the whole fight (but he was good at hitting me with missiles when he was outside my Cateye visual range, hell, even outside my intuition range, but his missiles were also easy to sidestep), plus he shot his own lost souls with rockets a whole hell of a lot, though the wiki says that he can't hurt himself (he still probably should be a bit smarter).  I guess he has a finite amount of ammo, because eventually he just stopped shooting rockets, so I was left blasting lost souls with my tactical shotgun until my Nuclear BFG charged enough to actually damage JC, and then it became easy.  Heck, it was actually pretty easy once I realized he would own me if I didn't sidestep his rockets, because after that I just had to sidestep until he fired, then shoot some lost souls, rinse/repeat.  It took me a while to realize that though, again because I'm dumb.  My angelic armor got torn up pretty bad because of all his missiles, but I had my two modded reds as spares, plus I still had about 5 large medkits and a couple of small ones going in.  I can definitely say though, if it were Barons (probably anything but lost souls) that JC summoned, I would not have stood a chance with my inventory.

---

I still had quite a few tactical blunders, but I think I'm a lot better than I used to be.  One of my flaws is still that I rarely use running, mainly because I forget that it exists.  Cateye was nice, as was Intuition 2, but I definitely wasn't good enough to use them to their full potential.  Intuition 2 was probably more useful, partly because I had it for so much longer, but also because knowing that there's a horde of enemies on the other side of a wall is a lot more useful that a little sight advantage in my opinion.  There's just too many walls for Cateye to be that useful by comparison, the way I see it.  If I had the choice between Intuition 2 and Cateye without having to worry about prerequisites and blocking, I would take Intuition 2.

My missile launcher actually got quite a bit of use(the first bulk mod I added was because I confused the rocket launcher and missile launcher and wanted to make a tactical rocket launcher; I just decided to continue with the bulk modding since I didn't carry many missiles), unlike most of my other games.  Intuition 2 meant I could blow hordes of enemies up while I was out of their sight, plus it was nice for keeping Mancubi and the like out of my sight while I killed them.  It did sort of hurt my ammo problem when I was blowing up Arachnotrons and the like, but hey, it was awesome to blow stuff up like that.

Very very nice win!  I like your style of prevailing even though you made a few tactical errors; that trip through the lava pits was entertaining though.

Now see if you can beat this game under those special challenges, or better yet, on a higher difficulty.  ;-)

I try to stick with my games until I die a horrible death, for the learning experience.  The one exception I can remember was when I was trying to do a 100% kill rate on ITYTD, but I put down my rocket launcher to grab and use a mod, forgot to pick it back up, and entered the Wall.  I ragequit pretty hard there.

My third best HNTR to date is actually an Angel of Marksmanship run (my only AoMr run, actually) on HNTR where I almost got to the Phobos Hellgate; that was actually a long time ago, before I had even won on ITYTD I think, and it was pretty fun.  Other than that, I've tried and failed miserably at AoB a few times.  I actually considered trying AoSh to attempt my first HNTR win, but I decided to stick with the standard game.  Now I guess I'll try out all those challenge modes.  I'll stick with HNTR for a while though >_>

I'm still mainly using HNTR myself.

Wait on Berserk for a while, though, it's really hard. Do a few non-AoB melee games first, so you have a chance to learn while still being able to shotgun some faces.

Marksmanship isn't so hard once you learn how to fill the pistol's biggest deficiency - reloading. Once you've worked out ways to nullify that issue, you'll do fine. Pistol builds are still my favorite.

Shotgunnery is probably the easiest of the challenges, since all shotguns are solid weapons, and the Tactical Shotgun assembly is extremely useful.
