[E|29%|YAVP] - My first win!
« on: October 17, 2011, 00:21 »

Hi All,

I'm new to these forums and thought I'd introduce myself with a little war story :-) This is my first win at DoomRL. I've been playing for a while and I've read the wiki and guides. I started playing on 0.9.9.2 on ITYTD but reading the guides I realised that it encourages a wrong style of play. So I switched to HNTR and got better :-) I stopped playing a while when work got in the way but I noticed the 0.9.9.4 release and decided I'd try again. This time, however, I was playing for keeps - I decided HNTR wasn't good enough. It was going to be HMP or bust.

So I started small - my first target was to win at the Arena. I did. I eventually got Private FC and starting to finally 'get' the tactics. Then my game arrived. I beat the wall (without a scratch!). I got to the Armory and found the Railgun (which is awesome!). I beat the lair and got my Cyberdemon insurance policy there. I started getting cocky. I entered the Mortuary (for the Reaper Silver/Bronze - I wanted to hit Sergeant in one game) and wasted a couple of medkits and a homing phase but got out. I made it to the Phobos Arena.

I held out a while but I realised that I didn't have enough medkits and my build (Scout Cateye) wasn't tough enough to take the damage. No problem - when I saw the writing on the wall I hauled out my nuclear plasma rifle and got ready to savour my first win - even if it was only partial. That was when I got this message:

"You need a full magazine to overcharge the nuclear plasma rifle!"

I stared at the screen in something close to despair. I tried running and dodging to no avail. The Cyberdemon, a sick leer on its grotesque face blew me to shreds. It had taken 4 hours to get there. I was crushed.

In a fit of despair I started a new game, my first ITYTD on 0.9.9.4. I didn't really care what would happen - I just hit the ground running and started playing through as fast as I could. I didn't expect much to happen.

But this happened:

--------------------------------------------------------------
DoomRL (v.0.9.9.4) roguelike post-mortem character dump
--------------------------------------------------------------

Joseph Hewitt, level 5 Imp Corporal Scout,
defeated the Cyberdemon on level 25 of the Phobos base.
He survived 21840 turns and scored 23585 points.
He played for 15 minutes and 26 seconds.
He was too young to die!

He killed 96 out of 322 hellspawn. (29%)
Who gave him the ticket to hell, anyway?

25 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 23 of those were killed.
And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 1 souls destroyed the Cyberdemon...
1 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I can't believe how insanely lucky I got. Scout Int2 was the key because I always knew where the stairs were and I could avoid most situations. I wasn't even bothering with weapons - it was shotguns all the way except for the hellgate were I needed the napalm launcher to get past the brothers. I hit two invulnerability globes going into the Phobos Arena - I got the Cyberdemon's Head! That's a medal I wasn't expecting for a looong time...
So I guess the moral of the story is... I have no idea. Learning on HMP makes ITYTD a walk in the park? I dunno. Anyway, thought I'd say hi and share.

Yes, playing on harder difficulties often make the slightly easier ones appear... easier than they ought to.  Though if you were to play it like the hard version, and if you are used to using lots of advanced traits, the easier difficulties can catch you by surprise because you don't level as fast (fewer enemies to kill).

But that said, it's still a really nice win!

It's true!  Switching to easier difficulties after getting used to the harder ones will make you go, "What?  I don't remember this being this easy!"  :)  And if you play enough games at Nightmare difficulty, winning ITYTD with only your fists seems like a walk in the park.  ;)

Thanks! I haven't played enough to get a feel for the master traits yet (only used Cateye and Sharpshooter so far) but now that I've finally unlocked Ultra Violence and Nightmare! and I'll start to give more of 'em a try... Next on the list is that UAC Silver though - can't let things slide!

P.S. Woohoo! Just got my Marksman Silver - Sharpshooter is awesome! Ahem... and now for that UAC Silver...
