--- Quote from: Tormuse on November 10, 2011, 23:54 ---I'm well aware that there are many possible strategies in DoomRL and I feel kind of weird about posting my views as though they're the best ones or something. I just... I dunno... I don't want to seem like a total dick, boasting about how good I am at the game when I know that a lot of people struggle with it.

Just imagine how it will be for me to judge everyone's entries and decide which one IS best, because there has to be a winner for this sort of thing. (Fortunately "best" in my case is best-written according to the criteria...not that it makes it any easier, only more justifiable.)
The whole point of having a strategy namespace is that people write down what they think is best: what is written is not necessarily correct or best (indeed, correctness is often limted to a very specific circumstance) and if anyone thinks there is a better idea than the ones listed on the page, they should also write down those ideas. This is primarily why the Game Information section is so strict about limiting its data to literal game stats: objective information goes in one place and subjective information goes in the other.
Nor should there be any implication that what a given person writes is their matter-of-fact way of saying "this is the best strategy". Write what you know and people will take it as it is. The Strategy:Guidelines page is very clear that there shouldn't be any arguments over the validity or correctness of certain strategies. If it fits the kind of criteria I have for the contest, there would be little reason NOT to try it out, especially for those who haven't settled on the way they will eventually play the game with sufficient experience. For the more experienced among us, there is rarely a best way to play the game, which is why my own (theoretical) entries would often involve multiple approaches.
On the other hand, "best" only involves the more complicated topics of, say, dealing with a particular special level or winning a challenge. The topics in the contest currently limit the scope dramatically to the point where there are few instances where there are wide-ranging opinions at all. I really wouldn't fuss over it, it'll come more naturally the more you do it.

Yeah, I don't envy you that task. :| Setting aside the fact that I just generally suck at evaluating things, there's so much subjective information in this game. For example, I've heard a lot of people say that Ammochain is the best Master trait and that it breaks the game, but personally, I've never used it. On the other hand, some of my best runs had me using Intuition, and you say that you never use it. :) It's one of the things that makes this game so addictive that it supports a wide variety of playing styles.
And on an unrelated note, I've been playing ITYTD Scout speed runs lately and I just got my 100th Cyberdemon kill! :D Apostle rank isn't too far off! :)

This is probably from a previous version, back when it didn't cost any ammo to use. Infinite ammo is considered by many to be broken, and the only thing offsetting that was lack of EE (which was, more or less, mitigated by assemblies like assault rifle and hyperblaster).

I don't use it BECAUSE it's too good. It's a personal thing.
But yeah, it's great that there are so many possibilities for the game, which is all the more reason everyone needs to write about them. (Heh, good luck with Apostle rank, I'm pretty sure no one's actually killed ONE of those, let alone three. And I mean, if you HAVE killed one already, you should probably have posted something about it.)

Umm... *Whistles nonchalantly* There must've been a change between versions or something... Apparently, I know something you don't know, so I won't spoil it. ;)

I find ammochain a lot less appealing because of the new trait path. It's still good, and the detour through shottyman is neat, but lack of free whizkid has made it not a no-brainer choice (even before assemblies, A2 or A3 plasms was quite powerful). If it were the technician master, I'd take it more. The change from 0 to 1 ammo per shot only affects some degenerate possibilities.
