Well, I have Angel of 100 games with melee builds for Vampyre and Blademaster, so here's one with Malicious Blades to complete the set!  :)  This time, I stuck exclusively with melee weapons and got a Malicious Knives Cross out of it and the lucky find of a Dragonslayer got me Armorer Diamond, since it was the last unique item that I hadn't found yet.

It should have been YAAM, but I was forced to abandon that goal because of my own stupidity.  I entered level 18 invulnerable from the previous level, so I decided to nuke it.  Unfortunately, my invulnerability ran out with two seconds left in the nuke!  :o  I had no choice but to homing phase out and miss out on all those kills.  It was a former human complex too, so it would've been an easy level.  :(  (Oh well...)

The part that made this run ridiculous was when I was lucky enough to find a Nano mod and I assembled Nanofibre Skin Armor out of an energy shielded vest.  I was already getting bullet, shrapnel, melee, and fire resistance from MMB trait, so adding fire, acid, and plasma resistance on top of that made me practically invulnerable!  The fire resistances stacked to make me basically immune to imps, Revenants, Mancubi, and Cyberdemons.  Even Arch-Viles, normally a melee player's worst enemy, were only doing 5% damage per hit and were too slow to evade me.  I almost didn't need another med-pack for the rest of the game!  And with Brute 5, dual-wielding two bulk-modded Chainswords, most enemies fell with one hit, with the exception of the Nightmare creatures, Bruiser Brothers, Shamblers, and Lava Elementals which fell from *two* hits and the Cyberdemon that fell from four hits.

If you have too much time, might I suggest you immortalize your experiences for everyone to read?

I did a Malicious Knives A100 last version (at least, it SHOULD have counted, I'm guessing a demon died stupidly in lava while I was wall-busting or something), prior to MMB. It's really not that bad once you get the chainsword and defensive stats going. Mine was done in about a third of your time, too, I suggest you practice playing quickly if you have nothing better to attempt.

That contest looks like a really good idea.  Part of the reason I haven't posted anything to the strategy pages is that there are so many empty strategy pages there that it just seems like a really daunting task.  Breaking it up into smaller, more manageable chunks like this should make it easier.

Another reason is that...  well...  even though I've gotten multiple Diamond badges, I'm well aware that there are many possible strategies in DoomRL and I feel kind of weird about posting my views as though they're the best ones or something.  I just...  I dunno...  I don't want to seem like a total dick, boasting about how good I am at the game when I know that a lot of people struggle with it.  With this contest, since multiple people are putting forward their own views, it encourages me to share my strategies as one of the crowd.

I'll put together some submissions over the weekend.

EDIT:

Mine was done in about a third of your time, too, I suggest you practice playing quickly if you have nothing better to attempt.

I find that if I go quickly, I die a lot more often.  Taking my time is what helps me win and not make mistakes.  (Well, make fewer mistakes, anyway)  :)

Just imagine how it will be for me to judge everyone's entries and decide which one IS best, because there has to be a winner for this sort of thing. (Fortunately "best" in my case is best-written according to the criteria...not that it makes it any easier, only more justifiable.)

The whole point of having a strategy namespace is that people write down what they think is best: what is written is not necessarily correct or best (indeed, correctness is often limted to a very specific circumstance) and if anyone thinks there is a better idea than the ones listed on the page, they should also write down those ideas. This is primarily why the Game Information section is so strict about limiting its data to literal game stats: objective information goes in one place and subjective information goes in the other.

Nor should there be any implication that what a given person writes is their matter-of-fact way of saying "this is the best strategy". Write what you know and people will take it as it is. The Strategy:Guidelines page is very clear that there shouldn't be any arguments over the validity or correctness of certain strategies. If it fits the kind of criteria I have for the contest, there would be little reason NOT to try it out, especially for those who haven't settled on the way they will eventually play the game with sufficient experience. For the more experienced among us, there is rarely a best way to play the game, which is why my own (theoretical) entries would often involve multiple approaches.

On the other hand, "best" only involves the more complicated topics of, say, dealing with a particular special level or winning a challenge. The topics in the contest currently limit the scope dramatically to the point where there are few instances where there are wide-ranging opinions at all. I really wouldn't fuss over it, it'll come more naturally the more you do it.

Yeah, I don't envy you that task.  :|  Setting aside the fact that I just generally suck at evaluating things, there's so much subjective information in this game.  For example, I've heard a lot of people say that Ammochain is the best Master trait and that it breaks the game, but personally, I've never used it.  On the other hand, some of my best runs had me using Intuition, and you say that you never use it.  :)  It's one of the things that makes this game so addictive that it supports a wide variety of playing styles.

And on an unrelated note, I've been playing ITYTD Scout speed runs lately and I just got my 100th Cyberdemon kill!  :D  Apostle rank isn't too far off!  :)

...I've heard a lot of people say that Ammochain is the best Master trait and that it breaks the game, but personally, I've never used it.
This is probably from a previous version, back when it didn't cost any ammo to use. Infinite ammo is considered by many to be broken, and the only thing offsetting that was lack of EE (which was, more or less, mitigated by assemblies like assault rifle and hyperblaster).

On the other hand, some of my best runs had me using Intuition, and you say that you never use it.  :)
I don't use it BECAUSE it's too good. It's a personal thing.

But yeah, it's great that there are so many possibilities for the game, which is all the more reason everyone needs to write about them. (Heh, good luck with Apostle rank, I'm pretty sure no one's actually killed ONE of those, let alone three. And I mean, if you HAVE killed one already, you should probably have posted something about it.)

Umm...  *Whistles nonchalantly*  There must've been a change between versions or something...  Apparently, I know something you don't know, so I won't spoil it.  ;)

I find ammochain a lot less appealing because of the new trait path.  It's still good, and the detour through shottyman is neat, but lack of free whizkid has made it not a no-brainer choice (even before assemblies, A2 or A3 plasms was quite powerful).  If it were the technician master, I'd take it more.  The change from 0 to 1 ammo per shot only affects some degenerate possibilities.

Nevertheless, achieving Apostle rank doesn't seem to be as hard as Game Hunter seems to think it is.  A couple of screencaps for you...

Funny that you mention that...  I actually had a game recently in which both Dragonslayer and the Berserker Armour generated and I couldn't figure out how to use either of them.  It felt like a wasted opportunity.  :(
