[E|YAFW/YAAM] First win
« on: November 11, 2011, 03:13 »

I decided to try pistols for the first time, and they worked out really well.  I hadn't realized until I tried them that pistols had decent knockback, and once I discovered that, I managed to defeat many enemies by shooting them right back out of sight as soon as they appeared.  That worked quite well except for revenants, which would frequently fire at me right as they come into view before I could fire back.

Finding a map on a couple of levels taught me to fire at enemies while they remained out of sight, and after that I decided to pick up Intuition 2 so I could do that all the time.  I took almost no damage after that, with the exception of the aforementioned revenants, and one small floor densely packed with arachnotrons with little cover.  I had no trouble with arch-viles at all.

As usual, I held onto everything like a pack-rat until I started having to make hard decisions.  I ditched the shotgun and all its ammo shortly after finding the chain gun, since both satisfied my need for a powerful weapon to take out things the pistol remained too slow for (such as hell knights at the Wall), and the chain gun shared ammo with the pistols.  Once I had the high-power pistol and Sharpshooter, the chain gun became obsolete as well, which drastically cut down on my need for ammo; I slowly pared it down to just two ammo chains, in favor of health packs, power cells for emergency BFGing, and gewgaws.

I also discovered the ability to prepare an ammo chain by accident, when I noticed that they appeared in the list of things I could prepare.

I found far more mod packs than I could use.  I assembled a piercing chainsaw because the concept amused me, and used it to clear out part of Halls of Carnage (notably while I had invulnerability going, to conserve ammo) as well as opening the doors (funny to think of a chainsaw as the subtle approach, when compared to rockets).  I also made a pile of fireproof red armors in the hopes of surviving all the late-game enemies with explosion-based attacks, which killed several previous characters; none of those armors came anywhere close to destruction, though I lost one non-fireproof red armor to the bruiser brothers.  I ended up dropping the rest of the mod packs around floor 20, after gratuitously modding everything else I carried, and I hung onto a pair of steel boots modded with one agility pack in the hopes of finding another for tactical boots (which I did on level 22).  I decided against grabbing Whizkid to use up more mods, in favor of traits which seemed more likely to keep me alive.

The Wall used up almost all of my health packs, which made things tense for a while.  At one point I found myself as low as ~20% health with no health packs.  I proceeded very slowly, shot everything I could while it remained out of sight (didn't have Intuition 2 yet at that point, so I spent a pile of ammo attacking the darkness), and made a beeline for the pair of small health globes I found.  Multiple times I found myself dealing with explosive attackers with very little health, repeatedly blasting them back out of range with my pistols, and hoping they didn't manage to fire any shots.  It took two levels of extra-careful play until I happened across a Supercharge and a couple of large health packs.  On the bright side, that careful play taught me quite a bit about how to survive.

I took out most of the Hellgate with the BFG, and in particular I took out both bruiser brothers entirely with BFG shots, using up pretty much my entire stock of power cells.  This helped me take almost no damage on that level, rather than dying to the bruiser brothers.

Level 17 caught me by surprise.  I didn't actually notice any special messages when I entered the level.  After I pacified the level, I explored looking for any useful loot.  I encountered a fair bit of acid near the right edge, which I assumed represented an acid river.  I stepped near a napalm barrel near the edge of the acid to to see a bit further and figure out if anything appeared on the other side of the acid; the barrel promptly exploded, which surprised me greatly with no enemies around to shoot it.  It took me another turn or two to realize that the acid advanced, at which point I hightailed it to the stairs, having explored everything apart from the advancing acid.

I found three nukes on my way down, and hung onto all of them.  On floor 24, I got lucky with an invulnerability globe right near the stairs.  I nabbed the invulnerability, ran for the stairs, soaked in the ambiance of Phobos Arena (somewhat marred by the saturated view, but not complaining), immediately set a nuke and then walked diagonally towards the center in the hopes of seeing the Cyberdemon (no such luck), ran the rest of the way to the final stairs, descended, and set off another nuke while still invulnerable.

(Note that this did award me a full win, despite the messages suggesting a heroic sacrifice; bug report posted.)

Small feature request: thermonuclear bombs seem sufficiently rare and useful that I'd like to see them in the History section with level numbers (On level N, he found a thermonuclear bomb!).

Congrats! I also just completed a Sharpshooter run. (I faced the same question of Whizkid vs. other traits as you.) One thing to note is that pistols only really have knockback with that master trait selected. It'll still happen every once in awhile without it, but MSs is the only reliable way to get it. Congrats as well on beginning to uncover the art of firing at unseen enemies...

Now you have to step it up to a higher difficulty level. :-) You'll see as the difficulty levels go up, playing tactically becomes more and more important...Thomas wrote a guide around here somewhere on it, but basically (more experienced users correct if I'm wrong) tactical defense largely involves using corner tricks and blind firing to hit enemies while they can't hit you. Hell's Arena is a great place to practice...

Congrats again!

EDIT: I would also like to see nukes listed in the mortem. I've found three a couple of times, but never anything more than that. They're certainly less mundane than, say, tactical boots. (My assembly count for them just on my laptop is like 87)

The guide can be found here.  I unstickied it because it was severely out of date and the Wiki is starting to show signs of consolidation on strategic advice.
