Making progress, I guess ...

This time I decided to try and finally get a HMP win in 0.994. Being most familiar with MAD playstyle, I went that way, and it proved a very interesting game (for me, at least :) ).

Nothing special in Arena and Chained Court - but training in Arena definitely taught me a lot about movement and especially corner-shooting.

Armory was fun. I already reached MAD before entering, and boy, does it make a difference against Shambler! In previous games, it took me ages to take him down without MAD, even when shooting him with an elephant gun right into his face.
In the Armory I also found a schematics, leaving me with only one basic assembly to find. Where's the nano mod, when you need it? Another Gold Medal would look nice in the Awards section :).

Moments later, I finally found the tech mod to assemble a tactical shotgun. I came to love this weapon before, and it became the main weapon of choice for me. For tougher targets, I picked up the BFG and missile launcher. Both proved very useful quite soon ...

Hellgate? Fairly easy. Two BFG charges to weaken the initial wave, tactical shotgun to wipe out the rest, and missile launcher for the Bruiser Bros. They never even fired a shot.

After clearing the City of Skulls and Spider's Lair (and collecting a truckload of energy cells there), I eventually found another BFG and I bulk-modded both of them. The difference between two and three shots without reloading can make a huge difference.

On level 22, I found the staircase to the Mortuary. I was there before (and HPD'd out in about ten turns) - but _two_ invulnerability globes very close to the staircase and my offensive arsenal convinced me to give it a shot. I had an emergency HPD anyway, if things would turn too hairy. So I popped in.
What followed can only be described as massacre. Eight BFG shots in all directions for a head-starter, missile launcher until I was all out of rockets and shotgunning the rest. I was lucky - the invulnerability did last long enough to let me kill all the Viles, and the rest was just mopping up.
And to add to the rewards: Angelic Armor was my 40th exo/unique, granting me Armorer Platinum - my first ever Platinum medal!
Yes, I agree - this Mortuary was not much more than a display of pure luck :).

The next level contained the stairs to Lava Pits. I only had one envirosuit, so I decided not to risk the need to bugger out and lose the 100% kill rate I had so far. As I missed UC before, Explorer and Conqueror were already ruled out anyway.

Level 24 helped me a lot with a tracking map very close to my starting position. This made my tactical planning to kill all the viles, revenants and spiders much, much easier.

Finally, the time came to face Cybie. Supercharged to 100HP and with Angelic Armor on, I was nearly the same juggernaut as he is. To his disadvantage I also had the ammo worth of ten BFG shots at my disposal. But when he was mortally wounded, I opted for a stylish MAD kill and finished him with my tactical shotgun.

Well, all in all, this was by far my best (and to be honest, also the luckiest) run so far. It's a bit ironic that while I have the Platinum Badge required for Major rank, I still miss one Silver for 2nd Lieutenant :).

And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

PS: I noticed that Shottyman's move-reloading does not work when you have no shells in the inventory, but you have a shell box in the Prepared slot. Having to reload the tactical shotgun manually is a major PITA ... Is this a bug or an expected behavior?

It's expected behaviour.  This is to your advantage, as it lets you use the shell box for quick reloads when standing and firing without wasting it on move-reloads.  If you're only using move-reloads, feel free to 'U'nload it.

Congrats on the win, nice collection of hardware.  While you may have gotten lucky on Mortuary, you used that luck effectively which is not always a given...

Just to clarify - what is the game time of quick-reloading from the box?
I can live with this, but when quick-reloading from a box into a tactical shotgun, it takes six actions while standing still, as opposed to a single move. It makes me feel a bit vulnerable, especially in the middle of a firefight.
And thanks for the congrats :).

Reloading from an ammo pack takes 1/5 of the reload time listed in your character screen. So for a Tac Shotgun, you should be able to do a full reload in about as much time as a move-reload. Also, I'm not convinced that fully reloading a Tac Shotgun every move with Shottyman is not a bug.

OK, thanks for the clarification.
Personally I don't think full reloading is a bug - for me it's a part of the reason while Tac Shotgun (and assault and Jackhammer) are so great.
