System requirements
« on: January 18, 2012, 07:24 »

I was wondering, does anyone know what the system requirements are for DoomRL? What is the absolute basic rig the game could run on? I imagine that it can't be very much. How would the graphical version compare to that?

In both cases it might be surprisingly high (although not much higher for the G-version). I develop DoomRL on a rig that is geared towards 3d engine development, so if I made any efficiency errors I wouldn't even notice. And even so, we once made the line and had slowdowns in City of Skulls.

Mostly it's due to the fact that the engine is written to be very generic, so there's a lot of calls handled by Lua, not by Pascal, especially while handling AI.

For reference, an old laptop from 2004 with no 3d card, 1.5g of ram and 2g intel processor, DoomRL keeps the CPU load at around 50% during gameplay (even between turns)

DoomRL runs great on my very old netbook : a 800Mh SINGLE CORE with 512 ram, no gfx card.
The G version slows down sometimes in crazy levels like City of skulls or Mortuary, but nothing bad. Still wondering if the release version will change that.

Sirdec, barely any game can utilize more than one core.

Also, what no-gfx card is it? Intel GMA 900? 950?

And no worries, that is exactly the target machine I want it to run on -- it shouldn't run any slower, and who knows, maybe it'll even run faster :)

Apart from that GREAT NEWS -- I was really worried it wouldn't go on such slower hardware -- I would be really thankful if you'd post results of testing both versions in terms of performance on the next beta, and the final one before the big release.
