119 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 103 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 3 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 11 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
10 killed the bitch and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

This game just all about luck.
Level 2 gifted me with a large demon-filled tension room. This meant not only a red armor, but enough experience for Shottyman. This made Arena a breeze.
Malek's Armor on level 5 then was an outright godsend. I never ever took that sweet thing off afterwards. It's stats, resists and regeneration are just way too awesome and I think that this is the best armor in the game (I have to find, let alone put on Berserker armor, though.
I haven't found a combat shotgun, but again - lucky. Two power mods in the Armory gave me an elephant gun and this baby can hit _hard_. It was my weapon of choice for the rest of the game.
Later, I tended to find invulnerabilities just when I needed them. _Two_ for nuking Cybie _and_ a revenant floor right afterwards, another for a level which started with _five_ Arch-Viles in the first third of the map, another picked just before an arach cave when I started surrounded by six of them.
The unholy atmosphere on 23 was quite a fix. I was going for 100% kills (as always ;) ), so I had to endure there for pretty long. In the end, I was left with last large medpack, so I went for broke to Dis.
Luckily, Mastermind never got a shot at me.
I just let her come to the melee range, and fired away. Ended up with Malek's Armor torn to pieces and 20% health, but also with her lying at my feet.

In fact, I'm a bit concerned about all this luck. I don't even have a standard HMP win yet, but two challenges down on UV, and, well, both would not make it through if not for an epic amount of sheer luck. This does not make me feel like having a reliable playstyle at all ...

But I will figure it out ... someday.

And PS: 1324 hellspawn killed is my new personal best so far ;).

Congratulations!

I've tried AoSg on UV sever times, but I always ran out of shells in or just before Hell's Armory... maybe I radar-shoot too much? Also, I see you invested in brute, is it worth it for a non-melee build just for the berserker, or did you punch stuff from time to time? I'd go for TaN first.

Going for Berserker was certainly worth it. Until I went too much for TaN and Iro, Arch-Viles' attack triggered berserk regularly and consistenly (Cybie's rockets would do the same, IIRC), making them much easier to handle. Add Malek's to the berserk effect - and you're at 90% fire/acid/plasma resists. In this state, literally everything could only hit me for 1 HP.
(On the other hand, Malek's 30% fire resist could have been the reason why berserk could have been the reason why berserk stopped triggering a bit too early.)

And about radarshooting too much, you may well be correct. I'm more of a reckless player, I could say, but when I get something into my line of sight (with chances of taking a hit before), I knock it back and then try to lure it into a corner-shooting position. It works way more often than not, and it can save you a boatload of ammo in the long run.

But then again, having way over 300 shells by the victory could have just been another example of all the luck I had throughout this game :).

I'll try it again and try to be more conservative with ammo. To think that on my first try, I felt foolish for unloading every single shell from dropped shotguns... after the first try, I went through every cleared level searching for loaded shotguns, making sure I didn't miss a single one.

Maybe I was overzealous with the double shotgun though.

And thanks for the berserk tip!

Maybe I was overzealous with the double shotgun though.
This. This is probably the cause. The damage dropdown for double shotgun is so high that sometimes, on a bad damage roll, it barely reaches the edge of your line of sight - or not at all.
Double shotgun is unbeatable for corner-shooting when you see the enemy. If you can get your hands and the focused double shotgun assembly, ...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
then you would have the ultimate radar-shooting weapon. (The mods needed for the assembly are not included in the spoiler.)
It all boils down to normal (elephant/combat/assault/tactical) shotgun for radarshooting, double/super when you're cornershooting and seeing the enemy :).

Yeah.. I got that assembly and I think I've already assembled it before. I will have to manage to get to Hell's Armory with some ammo first.

BTW, right now I'm playing standard UV game (hoping for Veteran Gold or Platinum Badge) and I'm in the anomaly with a shitload of shells (it's so much fun with an invulnerability!), despite not using any non-shotgun weapons. Figures.

But the invulnerability means you had to miss The Wall ...?
Anyway, best of luck. I expect to see a YaVP post soon ;).

Yeah.. I skipped the wall after remembering how I got owned last time I attempted it because I didn't take the arch-viles into account =)

It was a good run, but mortally wounded cybie got me in the end while I reloaded my plasma rifle. Still, I'm confident I can beat UV in a few tries, which is something I though I'd never be able to say.

Berserk activation from being hit is calculated before armor and resistances. At least 1/3 of your max hp(red flash) is the requirement for it.So 20 for Marine, 17 for others. That's without Iro of course.
