Hi. So, I'm here to document not only my first full win, but my first win--period. I'm still learning the ropes of the game, so much of this run was experimentation, finding out what items do, and clumsily wasting items (like skulls, which I still have no clue about). Anyway, it was an adrenaline-infused run for me, as I ventured deeper and deeper into Inferno, daring to push the limits of the Mortuary and the Unholy Sanctuary, or whatever it's called (the melee-only place). I didn't complete either, but I came damn close to beating the Mortuary. I ran out of ammo, of all things, and was forced to fight on the next floor with nothing but a chainsaw until I found some supplies. Energy cells were low throughout as I held my trusty plasma shotgun close. Near the end of my run, I grabbed an assault shotgun, and was able to use my supply of shells that I stubbornly held onto. No master traits whatsoever, except for a few of the smaller ones (intuition and shotgunnery or whatever it's called). Nearly died to the boss of the sanctuary, but a homing device saved me. No clue how I'm supposed to beat that guy without a huge supply of meds, or a secret awesome melee I have yet to find. Having two BFGs proved useful in some of the tougher rooms, like the Mortuary. Four shots back to back without slowing down to reload was nice, but probably unnecessary. Blindly slapped mods onto equipment after my plasma shotgun and phaseshift armor held three mods each. Finally reached Dis, thinking he was the last boss, when I had just picked up two Invulnerability Orbs on the previous floor, so I was certain that I would survive the blast--though, I had no idea that I had to wait so long for it to erupt! I was worried I'd lose invuln before the time was up, though it has occurred to me while typing this that I might have been able to blow it up with my missile launcher. Not sure. Dis met his end, and I survived the blast. Of course, the game wasn't over. I moved on and found Carmack in the empty room, myself holding one more thermo and lava element. I had no idea what the lava element did, but I was low on supplies. I shot off a few plasma shots and missiles at Carmack, but he unleashed huge amounts of skulls, and eventually more advanced demons. I used the fancy eruption pack that I got earlier that looks like a homing device, but that only helped so much. So, I popped the lava element, and, lo! I was invincible! I quickly threw down the Thermo, hit shift + Y, and shot off missiles with glee! ...and then lost my invuln with six or so seconds left. Crap. I threw missile after missile at Carmack, hoping that I could somehow defeat him before time was up. The Wounded Carmack died, as did I. And the grinning exposition, etc. So, technically, a full win. My first. But I had hoped to survive the run. I might have been able to beat him without the thermo, but at least I can say I won my first real go. Prior to this, I had only reached hell once, and died soon after. Enthralling game, and I look forward to future attempts. Thanks to the devs.
ih8regin:
with lava element, first use the nuke, then wait for 4-3 seconds left, then use lava element - the invulnerability is brief but will last enough to survive the nuclear explosion.
GrAVit:
Y U NO CLEAR VAULTS? :P
HexaDoken:
Might be a little late, but I'm here to give a few protips for ya ^^
Spoiler: Skulls (click to show/hide)All skulls gib the corpses in your sight and provide you with various effects. Type of effect vary between skulls, strength of effect depends on how many corpses were gibbed.
Fire skull simply explodes all corpses, damaging whatever happened to be near them.
Blood skulls heal you up. More corpses - more health.
Hatred skulls give you berserk. More corpses - longer berserk.Spoiler: Unholy Cathedral (click to show/hide)This shouldn't be dared without Berserk trait or Dragonslayer(which I'm in no clue how to get exept hax). Or hatred skulls. You see, when you go berserk, you turn into a real killing machine, doubling your damage and halving damage taken. With berserker trait, the UC is easier than anything - you don't even need epic supersecret melees, the chainsaw from the chained court is more than sufficient. Through, Butcher's Cleaver helps greatly too. You won't probably ever need medkits.Spoiler: The Mourtary (click to show/hide)Stack with BFG and 900-1000 cells and you should be fine.Spoiler: The Vaults (click to show/hide)In case you don't know what to do with it, you should bring the Arena Master's staff from the chained court and do "SESAME, OPEN!" with it at the vaults. This will destroy the staff and destroy some walls, opening the rewards to you. Still, vaults are friggin dangerous, they can be even more dangerous than mourtary(of course, if you're prepared for it). It's nothing BFG spam can't fix, but it will also destroy most, if not all the loot, so it's not the best idea ever. Also, the vaults don't often have THAT epic equipment, so usually it's not worth the risk.
Also, do not underestimate master traits. They can significantly help you.
Matt_S:
Spoiler: The Vaults (click to show/hide)Note that the left and most vaults have some destroyable tiles; you can check the wiki to see which ones. As long as I still have a rocket launcher with me by this point, I usually clear those before opening them all with the Arena Master staff. On HNTR, the Barons can wreck a lot of the armor there...
