[M|97%|YAVP] My first HNTR win (Now w/ AoMr, AoSh, & AoB)

What an amazing gem of a game this is. I discovered it recently and I've had a lot of fun with it. I remember going from ITYTD to HNTR and thinking, "how is this even possible?" I died a lot to the lost souls just before Deimos or to the Cyberdemon or some special level.

This time I had a little better idea of what I should be doing. Some things that have really stepped up my play: putting mods on armor (I was not doing this at first because it seemed like a waste) and simply carrying backup armor. By the time I ended the game I had 5 red armors, a few bulk and one power modded. Near the end I wasn't sure about my ability to handle the harder special levels, so the spider lair was the last one I did.

And good thing, too, because I totally messed up my chaingun build. The nuclear plasma rifle came in very handy. I took a bunch of eagle eye, thinking that it wouldn't block ammochain. Lesson learned. Fortunately, trigger happy + SoB is quite powerful on its own. It's just a bit ammo-hungry, hence why the nuclear plasma rifle ended up being very nice. Near the end, I found a minigun, which was cool. I even ended up killing the mastermind with it.

This run was notable to me not only because it's my first HNTR win, but because it's my only run so far where I wasn't invincible or zerked for the boss fights. I ended up killing the cyberdemon only getting hit by one rocket.

As for the mastermind...

Man, she HURTS. I BFG'd her thrice before she got in melee range, and then I hellwave pack'd her. :) Then I phased out and started popping off minigun rounds into the distance and ended up killing her out of sight range. It was beautiful. :)

Next, I figure I'll go for a 100% HNTR win, or try one of the challenges.. or maybe try HMP. What do you guys think I should tackle next?

Hmm... Not very bad. I'm not so pro in this game, and my first HNTR was even worse. Some kind of 25 deathes on 1 win... Now you can try AoSh or AoMr (Angel of Shotgunnery and Angel of Markmanship). Just go on!

I agree that you should go for the weapon challenges - it's great to train with the respective weapons (and probably the reason I never learned to use the rocket weapons much)

It helps that I found both Trigun and Anti-Freak Jackal early. Dual-wielding those puppies made everything but the boss fights a breeze.

I did a Gun Kata build and used tactical armor and tactical boots for almost the whole game. I can't tell you how awesome it is to outspeed lost souls while running. Good stuff. Dodgemaster took care of the cyberdemon, and intuition 2 combined with the fact that I slightly outsped the mastermind allowed me to snipe it from out of range. It just took a very, very long time; even with the awesome pistols. It only managed to fire one shot on me, but I dodged all four (ha!) so I got the mastermind brain medal too.

I would have gone for a 100%, but I came across a level with a nuke, and I wasn't sure what was going on with that. I assumed I didn't have much time to get to the next level, so I took the stairs as soon as I found them.

Pricklyman:
Trust me when I say that you have plenty of time with a nuke...it's something like 500 turns before it goes off. (Or something like that.)

Personally, I just go through like normal, but when the level feelings tell me there's 2 minutes left, I start casually heading for the exit. (Oh so casually...)
