My second HNTR win, as a melee marine build. I must say that this is NOTHING compared to my first HNTR, generic technican build.

For first few levels, my character was really bad. The melee weapons were pretty much useless anywhere apart from the Chained Court where berserk packs lie everywhere. After a few deaths, I realized that and used chaingun and double barreled shotgun(which I found at E1M2 lol) everywhere. But when I got the Berserker trait at the Wall(this could actually happen earlier, at Hell Arena)...

...my completely idiotic doomguy transformed into a machine of mass destruction, eviscerating pretty much everything that stood in the way.

Since then, there were almost NO moments where I ever opted to use anything exept the thrusty Butcher's Cleaver, and, after UC, the Spear. The only exeptions were:
Shambler fight, where I decided to use SSG and Shell Box instead. I feel like I could easily do that with cleaver, but I then still underestimated the power of melee.
A few tight moments where I couldnt get in luck of berserking and opted to chaingun everything
The Mortuary. I feel like I could do that with melee only, but hell, I've stacked myself with 950(!) cells for a reason! BFG SPAMMAGE
E3M6 where I got in a tight situation featuring mancubi and archvile spam. Nothing a bit of BFG spam couldn't fix.

For pretty much everything else, everything, I used melee and only melee. Even for cybie, mastermind and JC.
BTW, first full win. I couldn't stack up on envirosuit packs previous time and couldn't get the lava element, neither I had the luck to get an invulnerability sphere before the stairs, so only standart win. Killed that bitch with a bfg instead of thermonuke, tho.

So, summary: while opting to options any sane human would do in a real life situation(e.g. heavy firepower weapons), I've died 33 times before getting a first win. While opting to crazy suicidal melee berserk charges, I've died 8 times before getting a win, and 6 of theese happened before I could get berserker trait, with seventh being in Vaults and eight being on Lava Pits(accidently derped myself).

TL;DR - Novices, use melee builds. NOW.

I will probably try AoMr next.

Good luck. When you face Revenants you will figure out that it kinda sucks now.

Have I to kill EVERYTHING in the level for it to count as "complete"? Because, I've killed the bosses of all special levels and grabbed all the rewards, but mortem still says I had two incompleted. Thinking a bit, I can say that I surely missed one bro at halls of carnage(didn't bothered to look for him), and then there is the Chained Court, where zombiemans tend to get lost easily.

yes, you need to turn the level blue (look at its name in lower right corner, it's normally red, and turns blue once all enemies get killed) for the level to count as "completed".

Entered 11, completed 9. Yeah, it seems you missed some formers in both chined court and halls of carnage.

If you don't want to bother with the sergeants in HoC, you can simply wait on the stairs until they die in lava and the level name turns blue.
With the chained court, well, just don't leave unless you feel safe.

I've earned conqueror badge only recently after several tries not because of this, but because I missed the stairs, first to the lavat pits, then the vaults and even to hell's armoury. That was really stupid.

BTW, I completely agree with your melee build evaluation. Especially if you don't play AoB and can use shotgun until you get to the chained court.

So far I only managed to clear the mortuary twice (not counting nuking it) and it was with a melee build both times. I've yet to clean it out with some other build.

Try AoMC with Ammochain build.

AoMC with MCe works wonders as well :) especially with that nuclear plasma rifle from Spider's Lair. :) Did two yesterday, once missed Armory :( both full clears. Still, I like clearing Mortuary with melee too :) It worked better in 0.9.9.5 with any kind of indestructible armor, and I won't enter there without one when playing melee, that's for sure.

Yeah... clearing the mortuary in melee gives me extremely satisfying "knee deep in the dead" feeling. Very doomy, very badass, and the first time I did it very close, using up all my medkits and surviving just barely. I wouldn't trade that for infinite BFG ammo.
