So... old timers would realise that it has been a long while since I last posted a mortem -- that's because I didn't really have much time to play my favourite game (or any game for that matter).  But tonight was special.  I asked Chessa on #chaosforge whether to play Serious Sam or DoomRL, and she graciously said DoomRL.  And so, AoSh game it is (I've not played as a shotgunner much).

Gosh... where do I begin?  Ever since the class-change, I didn't really play much, and the few times that I helped test the game, it was always as a Scout, hardly ever a Marine.  But since the Marine class was the one with MAD, it had to be the one I wanted to go for in AoSh.  Yeah, I'm old school.

Hell's Arena was fairly straightforward with shotguns -- no fuss.  Then the Double Shotgun became my BFF all the way to hell.  Back in the ol' days where we could get a Combat Shotgun earlier, that had always been my mainstay whenever I played as a shotgunner, leaving the Double Shotgun behind due to its short range.  But this time round, the Double Shotgun truly shined given that many of the levels were claustrophobic in nature.

I crushed the Chained Court, and made a Tactical Armour because I hadn't found the Steel Boots yet.  Then some time later, some Tactical Boots were made.  The trait choices at this point was Rel->Rel->SM->Bad.  I had to choose between another level of Bad to hit 200% max or something else -- I chose TaN instead because realistically, I wasn't going to dodge everything that was coming my way, so non-degrading HP of 150% is more than enough for me.  Since I was wearing Tactical Armour which afforded no passive defense whatsoever, TaN seemed like a better choice.  Then I got my MAD as planned and felt awesome, killing things quickly with my trusty Double Shotgun which I eventually modded with a Tech mod.

Tackling the Phobos Anomaly with Tactical Armour + Boots was weird -- charged in all the way, turned around with Double Shotgun and blasted holes in the Lost Souls et al, then finished off the Bruiser Brothers in what felt like an incredibly short time.  One random cave brought up a Nano mod, something that I hadn't even seen forever.  I asked around #chaosforge, and the suggestion was Powered Armour of some sort.  I thought "gee, that's cool, let's do Powered Red Armour, now if there's a Power mod somewhere" and lo and behold there was one hiding in a corner on the same floor.  O.O  So the Red Powered Armour was made.  I didn't really wear it much because I liked my Tactical Gear which gave me more dodge and speed, things that I was more used to during the times I played as a Scout.

Hell's Armoury was straightforward enough, and the Shambler said good bye to my Double Shotgun rather quickly.  Halls of Carnage was straightforward for a shotgunner, and by the time I was done, I had like 8 to 9 stacks of shells.  Remember this number.

Then I entered the City of Skulls.  I unleashed the horrors within, and was immediately mobbed.  I lost my lovely Tactical Armour fast and used a couple of large med packs before I realised it was futile.  One phase device later, I was south of the mess and quickly put on my Bulk-modded Medical Armour.  That saved my butt as I faced the horrors with my Double Shotgun.  The City was finally cleared, and I scavenged whatever was left and got out into a cave level before descending into the Spider's Lair, which I cleared with some patience.  A level later, the Berserker Armour was found and discarded, and the fight against Cybie was a joke because I was wearing my Powered Red Armour.

By the time I got to the Vaults, I realised that I had a serious ammo problem -- I was down to my last two stacks of shells.  I kept my cool, unlocked the vaults, and blasted as many of the Barons as I could.  Thankfully there was a shell box available, and I grabbed an Assault Shotgun to replace my Combat Shotgun, which was really not seeing much use at this point.  At the end of the Vaults, I had only 126 shells.  I had to make a painful decision: avoid YAAM to do a normal win.  I had the Nuclear Plasma Rilfe from the Spider's Lair -- that's a free win if you ask me, so from then on, I played the coward's game, running down the stairs as much as I could.

And then I met the Spider Mastermind and nuked her to hell and back.

Damn, first win for 0.9.9.6.  =)
