20 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 16 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.

 3 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
2 killed the bitch and survived.

So.... it took me 20 runs to get the basics in, but now at least I finally have a decent yield for my efforts: 9 Medals/Badges in one run, including the elusive Medal of Prejudice (damn you premature enuculation), and enough to boost me to Sergeant Major.

Now for some fisticuffs - says here I'm going to have to kill 5 Mancubi in melee. I better find that Ring of Invisibility soon :S

In my early days, whenever i got invulnerable and met a mancubus, I rushed to him and melee'd him. Later I discovered the joys of AoB and realized that it was very unnecessary, but you should know that it's quite possible to melee 5 mancubi over several games without investing into melee at all =)

Play an Ao100 game far enough and you might be able to pick up some Bru, and/or WK up a melee weapon that isn't worthless.

Alternatively, I think it's kind of funny to just waste a few traits in Bru and punch out anything that you can't/won't cornershoot past 'almost dead' before it's in melee range.

Or simply YAAM AoB. If you zerk while wearing red armor and zigzag your approach, it's pretty much over against a lone mancubus.

Or just don't toss the chainsaw in your normal games and hope for an invul, like Klear said.

YAAM AoB or just AoB might be the way to go with them melee attacks. And yes, CHAINSAW! BRRRRRR! :) Finesse, Brute and Berserker are your friends, at least for the first time.

I acutally filled the 5 mancubus quote by pistol-whipping them (or shotgun whipping, or whatever I was using at the time). AoB or simply a melee build is the way to go, though. It's not even very hard.

Yeah, it'll probably be some in-between-thing; I met the 10 Demon melee quotum by blasting away at them until there was little left, then whip out the chainsaw to finish the job. But now might indeed be a good time to start A100. If I do a pistol build - which I need practice at as well - I can always deliver the final blow with the butt-end.

Melee game is very powerful. If you want to increase your rank, you should try it.

I'll happily believe you, but the treshold is pretty high: I tried AoB a couple of times, but the startup is pretty tough. I kept on getting slaughtered by the sergeants, especially in level 2/3 where the areas can be very large, leaving you little cover.

If a seargeant notices you, it's best to run away and hide behind the nearest door. He should follow you, getting into your melee range. It's even better if you are giftdropping - open a new room, place a medkit in the door/right in front of it/behind it and stay hidden next to it. You want to be at most 2 tiles from the medkit (and have a clear view on it) so you can enter melee with whoever gets attracted to the medkit. If there are former humans in the room, they should glimpse the medkit soon enough and get slaughtered by you. Use the run command to wait a couple of times.

Too bad imps won't fall for this.

If you hear imps behind the door, you can open the door and back off 3 tiles from the door, this way you're able to shoot the imp twice when he'll appear in the door, it will have to first get out of the doorframe (he can fire at you, but he cannot see you - or vice versa, while you can fire at it), then he'll have a chance to attack. You can do the same with zombies, just place the gift (heavily used armor, small medpack, or a substitute) 2 tiles away from the door. They will eventually see it and start approaching it, come through the door - surprise surprise! Medpaks work better since if a zombie is already wearing armor, they won't be attracted by another one.

Not really helpful on AoB...

In any case, if you are allowed a shotgun, you are able to one-shot any early formers or imps, so I don't see the advantage. IMO it's best to stand right next to the door, so you can cornershoot approaching enemies, which gives you much more free shots. If some imp decides to be clever and walks where it can shoot at you, simply close the door hive him a warm welcome when he opens the door.

Giftdropping works pretty well indeed, as does retreating - provided you have somewhere to retreat to of course. I think the last couple of times, although I could have been more careful, I had pretty bad luck with the spawning as well, being dropped of in the middle of levels, large open areas, enemies on all sides. I'll give it another try though, it sounds really interesting, and promises to be an entirely different approach than the shotgun/Intuition combination I've employed on the last couple of runs.

In case of AoB, since you can't fire, just stand 1 tile closer so you won't get shot when the enemy will stick its ugly face out of the door. You close the distance, he hits you for 1d3 minus armor, you attack, BAM, even no corpse (handy on N!)

Eh? Blowing them ass-over-backwards with a shotgun at point blank range will leave a corpse, but using your fists you'll actually leave none? Boy, does Doomguy have issues.
