Bad day all around....
« on: April 09, 2012, 12:52 »

Let me ask you all something-you ever have one of those increadably good days, where every day goes right and you have almost nothing go wrong and your increadably relaxed?

This wasn't one of them.

I was turning over the dirt in a garden I had dug recently, and guess what? I broke both the hoe-it's head came off when I was breaking up the large peices of dirt I had dug-and the shovel, which I have no fucking clue how I managed it. Digging gardens sucks.

That doesn't sound THAT bad...

In any case, I have a pretty happy period right now, so I can't think of anything with which to contribute to this thread.

That used to be a slogan for women's sanitary towels over here... :S

I'm having a bad A100 day myself. I keep on acting before thinking, haven't gotten past L20 yet. Must be my punishment for having a good time this afternoon taking my kids to the swimming pool.

Well, I had one of those days not long ago - had to take a half-day vacation due to food-poisoning myself, then nothing worked at work (not even the attendance system :) ), and in the end of the day my favourite ice-hockey team lost their final play-off game despite being in the lead 31 seconds before the end of the regular time.

That day simply sucked to no end.

Damn. Just half a year back I didn't have all of these, plus I had some debts and a crippling depression. And I was in that state for a long time too.

One meeting in a few hours from now.
Another meeting in 24 hours from now.
Third meeting in 48 hours from now.

Why is this going downhill?!

Run, to execute documents.
I'm going to emigrate to another country. In our area it's routine.
However, the idea that soon all will be well, gives force to control myself.

Meh, I've kind of been having a bad year...  :|

I've been struggling to find employment, finally fell back on a job at Wal-Mart, and now, they're cutting back my hours, when I was barely getting enough as it is.

A relationship that I was really hopeful about crashed and burned and now it seems like we can't even be friends and I'm seriously considering telling her we have to break off contact permanently.  (We've been in contact 8 years)

Most of my friends that I previously relied on stopped returning my calls and became distant for mysterious reasons.

I decided to go back to college and didn't get my first choice of program I wanted to enter.

I've been struggling with depression and anxiety and generally feeling burned out.

So, all in all, I've been having a pretty shitty time for a while.  I'm still hopeful that it can get better, though.  :)

Don't forget that while your brain is working, you have all the resources to make yourself happy. All the circumstances are not important, through hard work you always can do better. And never give up, because 'Your not going away guarantees you that you stay'

I was with you until the no food part, charity finally stepped in once I hit 115lbs (at 5'10" that is really bad).

You aren't alone. That sentence pretty much describes the last 15 years for me. There have been moments that weren't so cloudy, but mainly suffering and anguish. I've been told that it will get better, so I guess there is that.

Commiseration moment?  =(

I find that running helps to lessen the impact of the depression and anxiety.  It doesn't remove it completely, but at least it gives me enough energy to just keep on moving.

One other thing that I find useful is to stop being too isolated and just go out there and talk to people.  IRC is cool, facebook is in vogue, but nothing beats meeting someone to have a nice cup of coffee and just talk.

(Disclaimer: Life is still not a bed of roses for me in spite of what I just said.)

I can definitely speak highly of the benefit of getting out there.  For me, it was bike-riding in a nearby park that I found very relaxing and took the edge off the depression, though, as you say, it doesn't remove it completely.

And yes, spending time with other people is a big help too.  (And I too favour meeting people in real life rather than chatting online)  For me, the big problem in the past year was that my relationship troubles, work troubles, and friend troubles hit me all at the same time.  If it had been just one of them or even two of them, then I would at least have had the third thing to distract me from my problems.  As it was, I was spending a lot of time sitting at home with nothing to distract me from how miserable I was...  (except DoomRL, of course)  ;)

Don't forget that while your brain is working, you have all the resources to make yourself happy...

While that may be technically true, that attitude can frequently fuel depression.

I read a good book on the subject of depression recently that says that often, people's attempts to reason themselves out of it makes it worse.  That sentiment of "I can be happy if I want to" leads to thoughts of, "then why am I not happy?  I should be happy!  What's wrong with me?"  This leads into a downward spiral that makes you feel worse and worse the more you dwell on what you're feeling.  The unfortunate truth is that emotions are frequently unreasonable and irrational and you can't reason your way out of them.

I think it's best to find something to distract you from what you're feeling.  Feeling sad sometimes is normal.  You just have to find something else to think about so you don't make it worse.

I dunno.  Drinking on my own while listening to music I like (avoiding those sad sad ballads) have a strange way of calming me down.

Also some perspective on life I suppose, like realising that work will never be completed, just completed to a good enough level that it passes most scrutiny.

Hmm... when I'm depressed, I tend to listen to Depeche Mode and then all hope for an improvement of my mood goes to hell =)

When I tried listening to something cheerful while depressed, I realized that I will only program myself to be depressed whenever I listen to that no matter what mood I am, so I try to stick to music that sounds better what you are feeling sad. Besides, even sadness can be enjoyable sometimes.

(Hmph...  all those links say they're "not available in my country")  :|

Anyway, this all just goes to show that different people have different coping mechanisms for depression.  Actually, the fact that you prefer sad music while you're depressed fits with the theory I mentioned above!  Because if you try listening to happy music, you start thinking, "This should be making me happier, but it's not!  What's wrong with me?  Will I never be happy again?"  Sad music, on the other hand, fits your mood better, so it doesn't make you feel worse.

I guess people's ability to deal with depression depends a lot on what coping mechanisms they have learned.  Some people spend their entire lives in incredible hardship but are still able to smile, while others live a life of luxury and kill themselves the first time things don't go their way.  You just have to find a coping mechanism that fits your lifestyle.  For example, Motorheadbanger's method, mentioned above, of changing his perspective on his situation obviously works well for him, but might not work for everyone.  If listening to sad music is your preferred method of "therapy," then power to you!

since we talk about depression here, you just made my girlfriend laugh.

just a wild, wild guess - what if depressed people don't listen to happy music because they just don't feel like doing so? ;)

Yeah, it's pretty much like this:

Nope. Listening to cheerful songs while you're low leads only to irritation. It's not "I want to stay sad, so get out with this oh-so-happy stuff", that's just "somebody turn off this bullshit, life just isn't beautiful the way they say it is".

If you want to talk about music, I'm gonna tell you that the thrash metal is the most life-asserting music of all the times. You can listen to it while you're happy or while you're sad, it doesn't matter. It does not have its own specific mood, it's just very, very confident.

Fuck's sake: I finally get a day off on which I'll be able to play Doom for most of the day, and then the numbnuts from the housing corporation that rent out the house next to ours decide to send in some beefy guys with an even beefier drill. Which they repeatedly insert into the wall about 3 meters from where I'm trying to hear if I've just hit an arch-vile or a mancubus around the corner.

And the worst thing is that they don't just drill a hole in one go, but it's been going NREEEH-pause-NREEEEH-pause-NREEEH-longer pause-NREEEEEEEEEEEEEEH for over 15 minutes now. And with every pause you subconsciously think 'would they be done?'. I mean, they got to run out of wall at some point, right?

True. If happy, thrash metal psyches you up. If sad, thrash metal makes you happy, and then psyches you up.

Let's see...
0:12 Do you, gentlemen, have to be so fucking loud... since the very morning?!
0:16 If I don't mark the fucking sheets in the factory...
0:18 ...at 7 am, then in your labourmen opinion I'm some kind of a flax?!
0:23 And you can fucking rip my ears with that drill hence the very daybreak, not giving a fuck about people?!
0:27 So that the poet could not sleep more than you, just a little more than you...
0:31 ...even though he had fallen asleep in the morning!
0:34 So that I had my whole day fucked up at the very beginning!
0:38 The most important thing is that the intelligent gets fucked up! For the whole day!
0:48 You'll come back here and keep fucking me when I start working!

As I look at it, english is so poor when it comes to swearing. In polish we have five times more nasty words, most of which can be used in almost every situation.
As seen there.

On second thought, if our resident right-wing assclown is correct, the guys next door probably are Polish (since 'the Polish come here to take all our jobs'), and I should just play this as loud as possible. :)

One thing that I find helps me when I'm in a tough spot is listening to music, and focusing in on a game/problem to the extent that I can block out everything else around me. It's why I play DoomRL so much.

I personally love to listen to depressing music while I'm in a bad mood, as my mind will revolt against it and go "What the hell is this shit? This is just silly. Life ain't that bad."

And I reckon I could give some of you a run for your money in the "bad times" department.

Heck, thelaptop is 25% of my bad times. He's always humming and whirring at all hours of the night. I've tried unplugging him or turning him off, but it never works. It appears he fueled by some demonic origin.

I would've gone Psycho on their asses:

"YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES-DO ANY OF YOU KNOW WHAT SILENCE IS!"

But that cannot happen because, well, work beckons?

Shit. My laptop went out of service and I can not afford a new one now. And without internet access I feel like without an arm. Bad times ahead.
