Hm.  Two things:  1. Did you turn on running mode?  Shotguns take no toHit penalty from running.  2. Were you just standing there and reloading or were you doing move-reloads via SM?  If you were just standing there, yeah, you would take damage all the time, but if you were relying on move-reloads, it would be a little less annoying.

I would stock up on a couple of phase devices of some sort just to give me a chance to run away to heal when I'm in a tight spot.

You really do want to save all ammo boxes you can, especially on weapon challenges. One or two of those and a tech on a double shotgun are an incredible force against bosses.

1) I completely forgot about the running mode because I don't use it normally. So no, I did not use it because I forgot.
2) I was doing both.

Creaphis:
It's easier to armour yourself against melee damage than the mastermind's plasma damage range attack. Try to find/make good melee armor during the run and then just fight the mastermind from melee range.
