[0.9.9.6g][64-bit Ubuntu / 64-bit Mint] Freezes when going down the stairs

DoomRL freezes when a fully equipped berserker tries to venture to Hell 5 to kick some ass. Was really frustrated about this one.
some details:
- fullscreen mode was on
- X11 seemed to be dead, too
- error.log is not generated
- had similar issue with my linux mint, but instead of crash I got segmentation fault (not sure if it's related)
is there any way this issue can be tracked without an error log?

Check the kernel logs via dmesg?

I think that SDL might be at fault here if X11 is dead as well.
