Change to High Score Page
« on: December 28, 2006, 13:49 »

I would lilke to see a change to the High Score page. First, I will explain my reasoning. Everything was fine until I started trying for a Nightmare win. Since then, my HS list has started to be taken over by Nightmare deaths. This is mainly because you have to clevel-scum on the first level to get all your traits and then do a mad dash for the CD. This leads to really high scores without really doing anything useful in-game.

Here is what my HS page looks like:
--------------------------- DoomRL Hall of Fame -----------------------------

 N 236192Styro-AoH     (L:11), killed by a baron of hell on L12.
 N 223052Styro-AoH     (L:11), killed by a Cyberdemon on L25.
 U 185210Styro         (L:12), defeated the Cyberdemon on L25.
 N 182980Styro-AoH     (L:10), killed by a arch-vile on L10.
 N 175224Styro-AoH     (L:10), killed by a lost soul on L10.
 N 154072Styro-AoH     (L:9), killed by a demon on L2.
 H 116469Styro         (L:11), defeated the Cyberdemon on L25.
 U 88194 Styro         (L:9), killed by a lost soul on L15.
 M 61579 Styro         (L:10), defeated the Cyberdemon on L25.
 M 60748 Styro-AoM     (L:10), defeated the Cyberdemon on L25.
 M 55207 Styro-AoLT    (L:9), defeated the Cyberdemon on L25.
 M 54099 Styro-AoB     (L:9), defeated the Cyberdemon on L25.
 M 52437 Styro-AoI     (L:9), defeated the Cyberdemon on L25.
 M 46897 Styro-AoP     (L:9), defeated the Cyberdemon on L25.
 N 44364 Styro-AoH     (L:5), killed by a demon on L2.
 N 43256 Styro-AoH     (L:5), killed by a imp on L2.
 M 37755 Styro-AoM     (L:8), won by sacrifice on L25.
 H 37468 Styro         (L:7), killed by a former commando on L14.
 U 34408 Styro         (L:6), killed by a cacodemon on L8.
 H 34131 Styro-AoLT    (L:7), killed by a arachnotron on L11.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can see how my Nightmare attempts are pushing out my other games. I don't mind a game like the ones where I get to level 10 or further being on the list, but my games where I never get past the first lavel shouldn't be on there.

Here are a couple suggestions:

1. On Nightmare mode, have the level you get to have more of a weight on your score. That way if I die on the starting level, even if I have killed 300 demons and gotten to clevel 10, I will have a relatively small score.

2. Ideally, I think it would be great to be able to filter my HS list by difficulty or challenge. So I could see only my UV plays, or only my AoB plays. This would be a large change to the way the high scores are stored and displayed.

Four things will happen here in the next version:
1) Unfortunately score files will not be compatible with the next version
2) Ao? will be on the score list :P
3) There will be a separate score list for each difficulty (discuss!)
4) Nightmare respawns will have the NoEXP flag after a couple respawns :P.

1) I have no problem with that - I plan to start all my score anew with next version anyway :-)
2) That's good.
3) I think that a filter, as suggested by Styro, would be OK (Select highscores by: [A]ll, [E]asy, [M]edium, [H]ard, {U}ltra, [N]ightmare...). On the other hand, a separate highscore table for Nightmare would do the trick, too ;-)
4) Now I know why some people here call you The Ultimate Evil... ;-)

I agree with all that Valkeera wrote in her post, including Ultimate Evil - no XP??? At least make them respawn without their weapons after that limit! (But, err, with the ammo... Please...)

Wow, that will be great!

Although with #4 Nightmare really will be impossible. You may want to slow the respawns a bit in that case. There are a lot of times when just while reloading my chaingun I will have 4 or 5 enemies respawn. If you slow it enough it may even make some of the special levels winnable, which would be nice. Or you could make more of a transition between UV and N by having slow respawns on UV.

NoNononononono, please, please, no slow respawn on UV! I love UV as it presents now, it is quite ballanced! You can remove exp-scumming in Nightmare!(tm), but you need to give something in return to make it possible without scumming. You can slow ressurection in Nightmare!(tm), and make time of ressurection static, not random in some range. And time of ressurection will decrease slowly after some time spent on level to one certain number. Also it is really problem, that on first dlvls you can find only fex medpacks and globes. It's ok on easier difficulties, but on UV and Nightmare! their quantity are not enough.

Apart from that I have no problem with any of the changes. Separate lists would be really nice because my scoreboard is also dominated by lost N! games :p
A few minor thing from me:
- Insert another blank between the score and the name so they don't touch at 100k
- remove the comma between level and the message and make add a leading zero to level <10 so all the messages are aligned vertically
- make the game create a score.txt like the player.txt when I view the score board.
