[N!|AoP|100%|YaUW] True Purity, Damageless
« on: July 05, 2012, 08:17 »

EDIT: I forgot the Damageless tag on the mortem title.

I decided to amp up AoP to a even more ridiculous level. For this game, I added the following restrictions:

No activatable items except for envirosuits (normal human tech), and the Arena Master's Staff, which can only be used once, to open the vaults, which destroys the staff. It's a demonic artifact, and it must be destroyed.
No mods, they're impure.
No armor, your faith will protect you, except for the Berserker Armor. It's not as corrupt as the other armors.
No demonic traits, IE no Vampyre, or Army of the Dead
No teleporters, experiments with teleporters are what caused the demonic invasion in the first place.

Mortem dump follows:

DoomRL (v.0.9.9.6) roguelike post-mortem character dump

nuked the Mastermind on level 8 of Hell.

 He opposed the Nightmare!

He killed 1650 out of 1650 hellspawn. (100%)
He held his right to remain violent.
He was an Angel of Purity!

I don't know the names of enough deities to exclaim in order to accurately represent how stupidly unbelievable this is.
Always nice to see a 2Dev run, nice work.

Seriously, just try to get better in every game you play. I started at HNTR, and I lost quite a bit. It's through practice and a *LOT* of games that I've gotten better. I've clocked over 1300 games, with a couple of early resets, excluding ~1000 games on my practice profile.

You are wrong man. Berserker Armor is cursed for a reason. Same for DS.
Go with Angelic set instead :) .

There's a reason I used the DS/BA, something about the Apostle, and I just failed on the theming. It's not too much of a spoiler to mention the Apostle, right, since it's been in a few mortems around here.

Okay, question: Why is the Dragonslayer not mentioned as being found in the Mortem? Or does it somply not show up?
And as far as the Apostle goes, I mostly figured out how to get to him

There is a very specific reason that the DS isn't shown as being found, which I don't think you want spoiled for you.

As to the Apostle, he's pretty easy to get to if you can get all the right things in the right places. Killing him, though...

Actually, that was a really lucky one. First of all, since I had MBM, I could move/kill the spiders by almost jumping between them in a chain of destruction. Right after that I ran for the left side, and the Arachs had been on the other sides of the little walls, like I thought they would be, and when I came over the top of the top one I killed one, and the same for the bottom one. Then I moved for the right side, and killed the arachs there. I'm just lucky that they didn't start respawning too quickly.

TBH, the only bit of luck that I had in that game was getting through the Spider's Lair without getting tagged. I got really awful level layouts, and tons of Mancubi/Revenants. I'd way rather have Viles to kill, since their firing delay makes them really easy to kill. I've practiced DoomRL to the point where I can instinctively predict the AI, and I can usually tell where an enemy will be based on a bit of the level layout, and a hitreg sound. I can generalize where enemies will be based on overall layout, and I can get a really good idea of where each enemy will be on any special level.

TL;DR: I practice a lot, now I can see the Matrix

I think there is a 2Dev video already somewhere... I would very much like to see another. There's a bit of a problem with spoilers regarding DS etc, but maybe you could just skip it for once?

Once I get my gaming rig back up in the air again, sure, I'll record something. Maybe not as absurd as I usually do, but it shouldn't be that hard. I do a *LOT* of runs to generate one of these, so I don't want to record 500 practice runs + 100 normal runs until I get something. I've had a lot of work cropping up, and I can't play DoomRL all the time. Besides, my gaming rig's case is in a paint shop, and my craptop doesn't have enough power to run a doomrl record and not lag out.

Honestly, this makes me feel a lot better when it comes to game balance. Since I was basing your success rate on mortem-displayed data, it gave me the impression that you were getting a pretty high success rate on the beyond-ridiculous challenges, which in turn caused a good deal of brainstorming into what could be so expoitable as to allow for that (because, even for a seriously hardcore gamer such as yourself, damageless N! YAAMs should be pretty rare when compared to # of games played). If you're investing that many tries into these kinds of attempts, then I can definitely worry less about the high-end tweaks: even if most of your runs end at a very early stage, this is within current balance expectations.

But yeah, with the new challenge changeups, you should be able to definitively prove these kinds of crazy shenanigans without a video.
