Master assemblies
« on: August 10, 2012, 11:27 »

How frequently do you find yourself making Master assemblies? are they worth it?

I feel that the rare mods are too rare and ive never seen one(20 games past Cyberdemon)

Do you think they should be atleast 1 rare mod guaranteed in a level? I want guaranteed P mod atleast :(

I wish the two mods in the main part of Hell's Armoury were, sometimes, anything other than yet another A and B mod. Y'know, just to switch things up some. But, then again, every time I think that, I find TWO B mods. I once found four B-mods at the Armory and left three of them behind. (5th mod was Onyx, Trigun also generated in that level and it was a pistol run so I wasn't too mad)

Well, there'a guaranteed P-mod in Mortuary. Not really helpful at that point though.
About master assemblies - basically never.Once i aimed for MMB Technician wearing gravity boots and wielding ripper.Other than that and testing assemblies back in 0995 never aim for them.

Should assemblies be something that should be aimed for at all times? or an addition?

I cant think of another way to play this game than using technician to get a fast hyperblaster/assault chaingun(with SOBx2 THx2).

Any weapon below that feels a little too weak

That's a playstyle question, as the game can be won on any difficulty without assemblies. With proper tactics, you don't need such heavy firepower.

A cacodemon ate my original post, so I am tasked with the labor of recreating it as far as I remember.

IMO, you could probably always make any one of the Ripper, Cerberus Armor, or Cerberus Boots with little difficulty on nearly any run due to them not requiring special mods. You might have to scrounge a bit and save up most of your mods, but they're definitely the easiest Masters to build.

As for the BFingG or Cybernano, because these require two special mods each (fffffff two Firestorm, you will be mine one day, BFingG), I find the odds of building either of them outside of a specialized Tech run where you use Scavenger to scrap everything you find with the goal of making them, to be rather slim to none.

So, that leaves us with nanomac ammo and demo ammo. Call me biased, but I would assume most people upon receiving a nano mod pack are way more likely to assemble Antigrav Boots (not Master, practical and easy to make) first before nanomac ammo, and demo ammo is rather situational. I like them both, but as Napsterbater pointed out, you don't need heavy firepower, and you can get your hands on a BFG without too much agony, and a nuclear plasma rifle (even though the wiki says it's random, I always get it on the Spider's Nest. Luck? Or is it confirmed Spider's Nest reward?) pretty much all the time.

My personal preference is to use envirosuits (since I usually seem to end up with quite a few) rather than use up a ton of mods on Cerberus Gear (which is dangerously slow for my playstyle, and doesn't really offer me much advantage over envirosuits other than the knockback or plas reduction), and I shy from melee outside of specific challenges or theme runs, so I have no need for a Ripper. So for me it boils down into three undesirable Masters, two (nearly) unobtainable Masters, and two "ehh if I get an extra nano after building anti-grav boots or if I find a ridiculously sweet special worth modding" Masters.

So after a rather long winded explanation,

How frequently do you find yourself making Master assemblies?

Rarely, if ever.

are they worth it?

If you have the mods for the BFingG or Cybernano armor? Sure. For the most part? No. You'll probably get far, far better use out of your mods by either making lower level assemblies, or just kitting out a weapon with 5 mods to make a death arsenal.

I think i made some cerberus stuff once or twice... Not that i still had *real use* for it at that point of the game. And that's the problem.

Basic assemblies : mostly great stuff, i make tactical stuff very often. Or a (startscummed) speedloader pistol. Gatling gun. Some specialised armor or so.

Advanced : bit harder to make, and more of niche uses. Still use them quite often.

Master : Only ever made when swimming in mods and even then more for the unlock something factor than to use it.

Rare Mods should stay rare, a 10-20% chance for the *side-mods* in the Armory to be rare would be a decent improvement imo.

Upon recieving a Nano mod most people will just see a hell lot of every mods besides A.

I rarely actually go for them. I tend to think of them as rare as getting just the right unique for the build-style I'm making, except it takes a little longer. Finding an Assault Shotgun early on, or a Combat Pistol happens a lot more often than getting together the parts for a master assembly.

There's also the fact that the rare mods turn any weapon or armour into something pretty damn cool anyway. A nano, onyx or firestorm mod sometimes feels like you just pressed the "I win" button regardless of build-style.

Even a couple of bulk mods on the "pretty much guaranteed" Nuclear Plasma Rifle from the Spider's Lair (or Mortuary) or even just a power-mod on the Assault Shotty means any build has enough firepower to stand a chance, so there's not a huge need for anything better. There's always the Missile Launcher when in doubt, but no need for master assemblies. They're nice, they're cool, but they're not essential
